The complete draft of the Revised Zoning Code for Mount Vernon was unveiled to the public during a Municipal Planning Commission meeting on May 9. The city will be accepting public feedback until the end of this month.

According to a press release from Mount Vernon, the initiative to revise the zoning code commenced in late 2022. The city embarked on a journey to modernize its planning, zoning, and subdivision regulations. This move was aimed at ensuring that Mount Vernon is equipped and ready to facilitate strategic growth that aligns with its objectives and those of its inhabitants. A zoning consultant was brought in to evaluate the necessity for modifications.

As per another press release from Mount Vernon, residents can access the complete draft of the revised Zoning Code on the city's website at mountvernonohio.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/Mount-Vernon-Code-Annotated-Review-Draft-5-1-24.pdf. After examining the revisions, residents are encouraged to provide their comments via this website link: docs.google.com/forms/d/15ZQ5_WkuNowpi4aOthAGTCEpUwAiInzF-NCZX-aYMV4/viewform?ts=6630011e&edit_requested=true by noon on May 31.

Mount Vernon also announced that a special Municipal Planning Commission meeting is scheduled for Thursday, June 6, in Council Chambers. During this meeting, the commission will review both the Zoning Code revision and any comments submitted online.

The city employs Zoning Code ordinances as tools to determine land uses. These include defining what types of housing and businesses are permitted, setting development density parameters, and establishing site design elements such as architecture, landscaping, parking and access, and signage, said another press release from Mount Vernon.
