The Cardington-Lincoln baseball team went 1-1 against Knox Morrow Athletic Conference competition to start off this week, putting them at 5-7 in the conference and 8-12 overall.
Wyatt Denney hit a three run shot for the Pirates in a dominant 15-6 road win over East Knox on April 29, leading them past one of the top teams in the KMAC.
The Pirates and Bulldogs both scored two runs in the first inning. In the top half, Caden Dewitt smashed a double to centerfield to score AJ Hall and Denton Garrison, putting the Pirates up 2-0. In the bottom of the first, East Knox’s Caden Ridenour knocked in Caleb Armstrong and Bryar Householder on a single to right to tie things up 2-2.
In the top of the second inning, Cardington-Lincoln put a two spot on the board with Denney and Garrison both hitting RBI singles. In the top of the third inning, Fisher Schuman bunted for a single to bring home a run, and then Denney blasted a three-run homer to left to go up 8-2. They made it a 9-2 game in the fourth inning when Schuman hit an RBI single.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, East Knox cut the lead to 9-3 when Armstrong reached on an error that also scored a run. Householder followed with a sacrifice fly, and then Caden Wengerd reached on an error that scored a run to make it a 9-5 game.
Cardington-Lincoln’s Wyatt Wade hit an RBI double in the fifth inning, and after Dewitt was hit by a pitch, Merek McClure hit an RBI double. Abner Edgell hit a two run single to make it a 13-5 game, but in the bottom of the fifth inning East Knox put a run on the board on a Luke Holsinger sacrifice fly.
In the top of the seventh inning, Schuman doubled in a pair of runs for insurance, and the Pirates walked away with a solid win against a KMAC rival.
Denney was 2-for-4 with a homer, four RBIs and two runs in the win. Hall was 3-for-3 with a double, a pair of walks and a run. McClure and Wade each had two doubles, an RBI and a run. Dewitt was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs. Schuman had a terrific day at the plate going 3-for-5 with four RBIs a run.
Wade got the pin, going five innings, allowing six runs but three earned, six hits, and six walks, while striking out five. James Fiant pitched two perfect innings of relief.
East Knox was led by Shane Gardner, who went 2-for-4. Ridenour had a pair of RBIs and was 1-for-4. Josh Keith was 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and a run.
Cardington-Lincoln hosted another KMAC foe in Danville on April 30, and while the Pirates led 7-3 going into the fifth inning, Danville piled on 10 runs in the fifth and a pair of runs in the sixth to take the win.
Danville’s Cole Delaughder had two doubles in a 3-for-5 day, while drivng in three runs and scoring one.
Cardington-Lincoln’s Fiant went 3-for-4 and Wade, Dewitt and Schuman each had two singles.
