Four Centerburg spellers qualify for county bee

CENTERBURG – Four students in grades five through eight have earned the right to represent Centerburg Local Schools in January’s Knox County Spelling Bee. They won recent grade-level competition in their district.

Liam Sargent won the fifth-grade title by correctly spelling “furniture” in the 10th round. Alexandria Taylor was runner-up.

The sixth-grade champion is Aiden Weade, who correctly spelled “replica” in the 11th round to edge runner-up James Campbell.

Ethan Branson emerged as the seventh-grade champion when he correctly spelled “innards.” Lane Kloss was runner-up.

It took 16 rounds for Miles Bishop to win the eighth-grade title by correctly spelling “aptitude.” Liza Clayton was runner-up.

The 2024 Knox County Spelling Bee will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 11, in the Mount Vernon High School auditorium. The county commissioners will serve as judges. Taylor Gingery, gifted and talented coordinator at the Knox Educational Service Center (ESC) will be the pronouncer.

The county bee is facilitated by the ESC with financial support from the Mount Vernon Rotary Club.
