West Holmes goes 1-1 to start season with conference win over Lexington

The West Holmes girls' basketball team (1-1, 1-0) suffered a tough opening night loss to Dover (2-1, 0-0) on Nov. 29, but were able to bounce back with a conference win against Lexington (0-3, 0-1).

Dover took a 10-6 lead in the first quarter and 22-13 at halftime. Both teams scored 13 points in the third quarter and it was a low scoring affair in the fourth with Dover outscoring the Knights 4-2. West Holmes struggled shooting at 28.9% and 10.5% from downtown.

Allie McMillen led the scoring with eight points, and also had three boards, two assists, three steals and a block. Briar Cline had seven points, three rebounds and two steals.

“Our first game of the season against Dover showed that we are still figuring out how to play as a unit,” said Coach Lindsy Belden. “We have skilled players, but are still trying to figure out our roles.”

On Dec. 2 they played Lexington and walked away with a 45-31 win. Lexington led 9-7 after one quarter but the Knights woke up in the second quarter to take a 25-15 lead at the half. The Knights had a 9-5 third quarter scoring advantage and were able to take the 14 point win.

West Holmes shot 39 % and held Lexington to 20.5% from the floor. The Knights was 5-for-17 from three and Lexington went 4-for-9. Cline led the scoring with 16 points and had five boards, two assists and a steal. Aveona Yoder had seven points, seven boards, three assists, two steals and a block. McMillen had six points, 10 rebounds, three assists, four steals and two blocks. 

Lexington was led by Makaree Chapman with 14 points including 3-for-5 from three. She had two boards and five steals in the game. Cora Palmer had seven points, four assists, four steals and two rebounds.

“We bounced back well on Saturday and beat Lexington,” Belden said. “We took the ball strong to the rim, pressured the ball, and rebounded it well.”

Next up for West Holmes is Ashland (1-3, 1-1) on Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. Lexington faces Willard (0-1, 0-0) on the road on Dec. 5 at 7:15 p.m.
