Knox County Pomona Grange November Meeting Recap: Updates, Recognitions, and Future Plans

Knox County Pomona Grange met on Monday, November 20, 2023 at Wayne Grange on State Route 95, west of Fredericktown. A potluck dinner was had by all at 6:30 p.m. 

At 7:30 p.m., Master Lonnie Totten called the meeting to order. There were a total of 19 members present from all 5 granges in Knox County.

Legislative Chairperson, Sue Roy, reported that the National Grange has elected some new officers to start the new Grange year.  The new President is Christine Hamp from Spokane, Washington; Vice President is John Benedik from Spokane, Washington; Lecturer is Tom Gwin from Olympia, Washington; and Chaplin is Kay Hoffman Stiles from Westminister, Maryland. Roy also announce that there will be no 7th Degree at next year's convention, due to the cost of putting it on. Some items the National Grange is working on is Health Care lowering co-payments and the need to get more youth involved with grange. Knox County Pomona Grange should work on hosting a vaccination clinic next year. If we do, should be in September. We should talk with the State to have a State Bee Director and not in the Department of Agriculture.

Family Activities Chairperson, Mary Jewell received from the Pleasant Street Elementary 3rd graders, thank you notes for their dictionaries. Jewell only read one of the notes, but you can see her to read more. Dee Smith read thank you notes from the Fredericktown Tomato Show Board of Directors for sponsoring the Flower Exhibit; Cindy Campbell for her gift certificates and Mary Jewell for helping to pay expenses to the Ohio State Grange Convention.

County Deputy Cindy Campbell thanked Pomona Grange for her expenses to the Ohio State Grange and that she was sorry that she couldn't stay for the whole convention, but had a very special wedding to attend on Saturday, which was for her son. The County Masters meeting will be December 3 at 4:00 p.m. at Morgan Grange. They will set the meetings for next year and discuss any other business for the upcoming events. Campbell also commented on the 150th Birthday of Wayne Grange held on Sunday, November 12. The county grange challenge results were 1st place was Morgan Grange, 2nd place was Monroe-Dan Emmett Grange and 3rd place was Wayne Grange. Congratulations on your hard work and hope they all continue to work for the community next year.

Delegates Sue Bateman and Lonnie Totten reported on the business at the Ohio State Grange Convention. They elected Jim Russell back to the Executive Committee for another 3 year term. They reported on the resolutions that were passed and rejected by the convention. One very important resolution was the passage of nominating Ron & Aileen Hiltner to the Ohio State Grange Hall of Fame. Results of the convention will be posted on the website for the Ohio State Grange. Sue Bateman and Lonnie Totman both thanked the Pomona Grange for sending them to the convention.

Cindy Campbell presented the awards from the Ohio State Grange convention to the following: Art Contest - Scene - Non member to Valerie Deedrick, Morgan Grange sponsored, placed 3rd place; Photography Contest - Scenery, Heather Miller, Wayne Grange 2nd place - Agriculture/Farming, Cindy Campbell, Morgan Grange 1st place - Grange Activity, Heather Miller, Wayne Grange 2nd place and Any Subject, Etta Arnholt, Monroe-Dan Emmett Grange 1st place. Comfort Toys, Oneta Debolt, Morgan Grange 2nd place. Bat House, Belinda Litt, Wayne Grange 3rd place. Blue Bird House, Margaret Ann Ruhl, Wayne Grange 3rd place. Stitch in Time, Betty's Cutlery Roll, Priscilla Arnholt, Monroe-Dan Emmett Grange 4th place - Kitchen Helpers, Oneta Debolt, Morgan Grange 2nd place. Nifty Needles, Afphan crochet, Judy Williams Morgan Grange 5th place. Rock-A-Bye Baby 2 pieces crochet, Judy Williams, Morgan Grange 1st place. Rock-A-Bye Baby 2 pieces knit, Loretta Crego, Morgan Grange 1st place. Something to Wear Crochet, Judy Williams, Morgan Grange 1st place. Shawl Wrap-Prayer Shawl knit, Margaret Ann Ruhl, Wayne Grange 1st place. Plastic Canvas, Mary Beutel, Wayne Grange 2nd place. And Knife Block with cutting board, Tom Debolt, Morgan 2nd place.

Lecturer Deb Hamilton started the program with Middlebury, David Daniels  Daniels passed out paper with A Plumber with a Sense of Humor, The Bathtub Test, Saying Goodnight to Mother and Food Facts Test. JoAnn Walton from Morgan Grange had a paper to complete on What's on Your Phone? Etta Arnholt from Monroe-Dan Emmett won with 120 points as she must use her phone a lot. Wayne Young from Harrison Grange had no program, but was glad to be present. Etta Arnholt from Monroe-Dan Emmett presented a song call the 12 Days of Harvest and a word search of Past and Present Granges of Knox County. Deb Hamilton from Wayne Grange talked about the story of Turkeys, then gave everyone some "Turkey Poop". 

Next meeting will be Monday, December 18, 2023 at 6:00 p.m. Location will be at the Farmer's Daughter Restaurant at the corner of Vine and Main Streets in Mount Vernon. It will be our Christmas Dinner.
