Corri Vermilya of the Loudonville Redbirds girls' basketball team | Coach Tyler Bates

Loudonville’s shooting guard Corri Vermilya is no stranger to accolades, and the junior guard from Loudonville picked up another after a terrific opening week, as she was named Mount Vernon Athlete of the Week.

Vermilya opened the season with a double/double, going for 30 points and 15 rebounds to fuel a 71-32 blowout victory over Lexington the Redbird girls’ basketball team. She nearly had a triple/double in the game, showing outstanding defensive prowess with eight steals. She also dished out five assists, showing that she was able to find open shooters with her court vision.

Vermilya followed up with 18 points, nine rebounds, six steals, three assists and two blocks in another lopsided win, 61-25 over last year’s KMAC champions Mount Gilead. She tied Nikki Weber for the Loudonville career steal record with her 389th during the win over the Indians.

Vermilya is one of the best players in the state, as last year she was named Ohio Division III Player of the Year OPSWA Division III State Player of the Year, Mid-Buckeye Conference Player of the Year among other awards. She averaged a double/double last year at 28.1 ppg and 12.8 boards. Vermilya showed right out of the gate this season that the hype is real after another year of experience. Coach Tyler Bates spoke about her drive, basketball intelligence and the work she has put in on the court.

“Corri has worked tirelessly to get where she is at today,” Bates said. “She has a high IQ on the court and a great combination of physical and mental toughness”.

Bates also said that she is an excellent locker room presence, as she is an inspiration to others to prepare for the competition.

“Her teammates respect her preparation,” Bates said. “She serves as a great example of what working to reach your potential means. Whether it is in the weight room, conditioning, practicing or studying film - Corri is pretty locked in and committed.”

Congratulations to Corri Vermilya and good luck to her and the Redbirds this week.
