After a three-year absence, the Mount Vernon Music and Arts Festival Flower Show will again be back and sponsored by the Knox County Garden Clubs. The Flower Show will be held Aug. 11, 12 and 13 at the Mount Vernon Living Center, 201 N. Main St. in Mount Vernon.
The Flower Show will accept entries on Aug. 11 from 8 to 11 a.m. The show is open to all adult and junior amateur gardeners and amateur and professional artistic designers. You do not have to be a member of a garden club or a master gardener. Competition is open to the world. There is no entry fee. Schedules may be picked up at the Living Center entrance after July 5. Schedules contain all rules and the process of entering.
The show will be open to the public from Aug. 11, from 4 to 8 p.m., Aug. 12, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no admission fee to visit the show.
The artistic part of the show is titled “The Art Of Georgia O’Keeffe.” The design classes will use the title of one of her paintings. There will be classes for traditional designs and creative designs. There are four sections of classes, one section is for adult amateur, professional arranger, student judge, judge and judge emeritus. The second section is open to any adult amateur. There is also a section for junior arrangers under the age of 19 and a section for Living Center residents.
A large horticultural division of the show is open to all amateur gardeners. There are classes for annuals, perennials, gladiolus, cacti, succulents, grasses, container-grown indoor plants, container-grown outdoor plants, shrubs, vegetables, fruit, herbs and a market basket of several varieties of vegetables and/or fruit.
A junior section for those under the age of 19 is for one bloom, one spray, one spike of any annual or perennial, a container-grown plant and the favorite class of a constructed creature using vegetable and/or fruit and/or plant material. A section for Living Center residents is for container-grown plants.
Open judging by an accredited Ohio Association of Garden Clubs (OAGC) judge using the OAGC Standard System will begin at 1 p.m. on Aug. 11. Judging is open to show participants only.
To help first-time exhibitors and to refresh past exhibitors there will be two workshops, one for horticulture and one for artistic. The workshops are for adults and juniors.
The first workshop for horticulture will be on July 5, at the Living Center at 1 p.m. There will be guidelines on how to enter and a demonstration on how to groom, prepare and show cut flowers, annuals, perennials, dahlias, glads, herbs, grasses, container-grown plants and vegetables. Hopefully, there will be some examples to share for participants to actually groom and prepare exhibits. If participants have horticulture that is on the schedule, please bring them. This has been an unusual growing season and we need as many examples of horticulture as possible to show.
The second workshop on artistic designs is on Aug. 2, at 1 p.m. at the Living Center. Tips on entering, mechanics and demonstrations on types of designs to be exhibited at the show will be shared. Participants are asked to choose one to two designs they are thinking of entering. Bring a container(s) with soaked oasis (flower foam) or needlepoint to hold plant material including flowers, greens and if needed, line material or accessories. Designs will be made by participants with help and suggestions.
These workshops are opportunities to ask for suggestions and help to have successful exhibits of horticulture and artistic designs for the Flower Show.
