MOUNT VERNON – Traffic patterns are changing in the city on several streets that are intended as temporary, but could last through the summer, according to a city press release.
The traffic signals at the intersection of Belmont and Mansfield avenues were turned off. Temporary stop signs will be installed for up to 90 days.
Safety-Service Director Rick Dzik authorized Street Department Superintendent Tom Hinkle to deactivate the traffic signals and install the stop signs to enable the installation of new signals and equipment at the intersection. This began on June 6 and is expected to continue until Sept. 4, or until the new signals are operational.
Dzik used his authority under City Ordinance 305.04 to also direct Hinkle to modify the traffic pattern for West Hamtramck Street between North Mulberry and North Sandusky streets by covering the one-way signs pertaining to Hamtramck that are in the vicinity. In addition, this same section of West Hamtramck has been authorized as a temporary truck route.
This modification is being made starting on Thursday, June 15, to allow for the safe operation of construction vehicles working on the site at 301 N. Mulberry St., according to the press release. Residents are strongly encouraged not to park on West Hamtramck Street between North Mulberry and North Sandusky streets, if it is possible for them, for the 90-day period from June 15 until Sept. 13.
