MOUNT VERNON – Three juveniles were arrested and have been charged with felonies in connection with a recent incident at the Hiawatha Water Park pool.

Mayor Matt Starr said the city is pressing charges for felony burglary and vandalism against the juveniles. Their names are not being released due to their ages.

“If anybody sees any issues in the parks, specifically our bathrooms that continue to be targeted, please report it to the police department and let them know,” Starr said.

The city needs to start a police report on these incidents to start the process of finding and catching them, he said.

Glaub joins Mount Vernon PD

Patrol Officer Alexis Glaub was sworn in last week as the newest recruit. She was a lateral hire, coming to Mount Vernon after four years of service in Zanesville, Ohio.

This is the first of three positions the City Council gave permission to hire, with two more hires needed to fully staff the department, Starr said.

Keep vehicles off the grass at Hiawatha Water Park

The Mount Vernon Police and Parks Department noted that the Hiawatha Water Park is open, but they want to remind residents that parking in the grass is not allowed.

“We don't want people parking in the grass," Starr said. "We’ve got plenty of spots on the asphalt for people to park; we want to keep the grass available for the people who are recreating in the lawn area."

Holidays and parades in Mount Vernon

The Mount Vernon Fire Department’s crews completed EMS Protocol Update training, which keeps them at standards for another year.

Training for new hires and existing firefighters continue, Starr said.

The Fire Department had the honor to escort Bill Ferguson, a retired Army sergeant, in the Memorial Day Parade.

The city’s logistics team met this week to make plans for the Independence Day celebration.
