Mount Vernon 8, Granville 7
Mount Vernon (10-4, 5-3) and Granville (5-6, 3-4) went back and forth on April 20, and despite a late push by the Blue Aces, the Yellow Jackets were able to come back in the seventh with an 8-7 win led by a two-RBI day by Jonny Askew.
Granville went up 1-0 in the first, and the 2-1 in the second, but Mount Vernon took a 4-2 lead in the third inning. Granville added a fifth-inning run but the Yellow Jackets added two to make it a 6-3 game. The Blue Aces took a late seventh-inning lead with four runs, but Mount Vernon scrapped back with two runs to take a one-run victory.
Mount Vernon had eight hits on the day and was led by Askew, who was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Konner Daughriety was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and an RBI while scoring twice. Cedric Burger was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Jagger Dohn pitched 4.1 innings allowing four earned run and seven hits while striking out five batters. Daughriety got the win with two innings, two earned runs, four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Brody Hughes also pitched two-thirds of an inning with one hit and one strikeout.
Fredericktown 12, Danville 2
Fredericktown (12-0, 7-0) continued its 2023 dominance with their 12th straight win, this time a 12-2 victory over KMAC rival Danville (6-9, 1-6) fueled by homers by Kaid Carpenter and Xavier Mullins as the Freddies remain undefeated.
Both teams scored twice in the first inning, but the Freddies pur up five runs in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth. They had 11 hits in the game and Danville had seven hits.
Mullins led the Freddies' offense, going 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBIs. Brandon Hogg was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a pair of doubles, and a triple. Carpenter homered in a 1-for-3 day with a walk and two RBIs. Caleb Sheriff was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Danville was led by Grayson Brokaw, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Lane Cline went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Levi Furay was 2-for-2 with a double and a steal.
Sheriff was the winning pitcher with four innings, one earned run, seven hits and two strikeouts while walking one. Reuben Troyer took the loss for Danville going three innings allowing nine earned runs and six walks while striking out two batters.
East Knox 14, Centerburg 2
East Knox (8-3, 1-7) capitalized on a six-run third inning and a two-RBI day by Landon Spearman to cruise to a 14-2 win over KMAC rival Centerburg (2-10, 1-7) on April 20.
East Knox started the game strong with a four-run first and followed with two runs in the second and six runs in the third to go up 12-0. Centerburg got on the board for a run in the fourth inning, but East Knox scored a pair of runs as well. The Trojans scored one more run in the fifth, but the Bulldogs were able to hold on for an easy 12-run victory.
Landon Spearman got the win for the Bulldogs, throwing four innings of two-hit ball allowing only one run while striking out two, and walking none. Dustin Springer pitched one inning out of the bullpen allowing a run on one hit and two walks, while striking out two.
East Knox had 10 hits in the game. Spearman had a strong day at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with and two RBIs. He also swiped two bags. Caden Wengard went 2-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and a steal.
For the Trojans, Colton Petry was 1-for-2 with a triple. Garrett Belcher had a 2-for-2 day with a run scored.
Columbus Academy 6, Northmor 3
Columbus Academy (9-4, 7-1) went up early against Northmor (10-2, 6-1) and never looked back, holding the Golden Knights to only two hits in a 6-3 win on April 22.
The Vikings put two on the board in the first and added four runs in the second for all of their scoring, and that was enough to take the win. Northmor scored a run in the first and two runs in the second inning.
For the Knights, Nick Armrose and Caiden Martinez each went 1-for-3 with singles in the game. Grant Bentley, Trevor Brubaker and Armrose all had runs scored. The lone RBI was by Bryce Cooper on a sacrifice. Cooper also walked and stole two bases. Bentley also stole a base for the Golden Knights.
Cardington-Lincoln 12, Elgin 9
Cardington-Lincoln (6-5, 5-1) was down early, but they were able to claw their way back for a 12-9 win over Elgin (8-5-1, 7-0) on April 20, led by AJ Hall who had three hits including a triple for the Pirates.
The Comets went up 7-1 in the first inning. However, the Pirates battled back for five runs in the second and four runs in the third to make it a 10-7 game. Elgin scored a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth inning, but Cardington-Lincoln put two runs on the board in the sixth to hold on for a back-and-forth win.
The Pirates' bats were alive against Elgin, as C-L connected for 17 hits. Hall was 3-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Denton Garrison had a 1-for-4 day and piled on three RBIs. Dillon Minturn was 3-for-4 with a double. Wyatt Denney was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI.
Hall was the winning pitcher for Cardington-Lincoln, going 2.1 innings with an earned run, two hits and four walks.
Northmor 8, Highland 4
Northmor (9-1, 5-1) got a late surge against Highland (5-2, 1-0) to take an 8-4 win on April 20, led by a two-RBI day for Cooper Thomas.
Northmor and Highland each scored a run in the second inning, but Highland took the lead in the fourth with a run and added another run in the fifth to make it 3-1. Northmor scored twice in the fifth to tie the game at 3-3, but Highland scored a run in the sixth inning to go up 4-3. Northmor then battled back with five runs in the sixth to take an 8-4 lead and held on for the win.
Thomas was 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs. Drew Hammond was also solid for Northmor, hitting a double on a 1-for-3 day with an RBI and two runs scored. Trevor Brubaker had a pair of RBIs and a walk.
Picking up the win was Bryce Cooper, who went three innings allowing an earned run on four hits while striking out one and walking two.
Highland was led by Brock Church, who was 2-for-4 with a triple and a steal in the game. Kort Sears was 2-for-2 with three runs, four steals and a walk. Evan Johnson and Layton Shaffer each had RBIs.
Zach Schmidt had a solid pitching performance for the Fighting Scots with 4.1 innings, two earned runs, four hits and three strikeouts. Drew Altizer took the loss with three earned runs, one hit and two walks in one inning of relief.
“The Highland Scots found out that not playing a complete game at the high school level will usually come back to haunt you, and it cost the Scots a game at Northmor on Thursday,” said Highland Coach Donovan Kline. “The Scots wasted a solid pitching performance from senior Zach Schmidt.”
Kline added, “Late-inning walks, hits and defensive miscues doomed the Scots to their third straight loss of the season. The Scots were not sharp on the bases, as five different Scots were called out on the base paths during the game.”
