Paddle for Heroes is an organization dedicated to helping people stay healthy and active and to continue to achieve its mission of helping veterans, first responders and their families get out on the water with river cleanups, paddling expeditions and the therapeutic healing of paddling. They also set up fundraising events for the public to attend and that includes the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk at Ariel-Foundation Park on May 6 at 9 a.m.

The 5K Run/Walk will take participants through scenic Ariel-Foundation Park. The course is a combination of trail and road running, and Stephen Fleming, founder and president of Paddle for Heroes, told the Mount Vernon News that participants “can run or walk and you can bring your furry friends too.”

Onsite, the Ohio Army National Guard will have an interactive static display.

About Paddle for Heroes

Each year, Paddle for Heroes does several river cleanups on the Mohican River, the Kokosing River and other rivers in the region. The group sees the efforts as a great way to get out on the water and help keep our waterways clean.

In 2019, Paddle for Heroes raised more than $35,000 to have an ADA-accessible kayak launch installed at Ariel-Foundation Park and they are currently helping raise funds for an ADA-accessible kayak launch at the William R. Gaines Jr. Veterans Memorial Park in Port Charlotte, Florida.

Paddle for Heroes will launch their 7th Annual 160-mile paddle from Mount Vernon to Marietta on June 10, in honor of Danville police officer Tom Cottrell.
