Wrestling tournaments were on the mats last weekend in preparation for the OHSAA sectional tournaments starting this weekend, and four girls and 17 boys won first-place crowns in their weight classes.
In girls wrestling, at the Freddie Invite, host Fredericktown finished in fourth place with 56.0 points, just missing the podium by 0.5. Cardington-Lincoln was eighth with 32.0. First-place finishers included Cammie McKinley, Fredericktown, at 135 lbs. and Camron Sherman, Cardington-Lincoln, at 170 lbs.
At the Delaware Hayes Girls Invitational, Highland placed eighth with 50.0 points and Mount Vernon was 18th with 30.0. First-place finishers included Emma Rinehart, Mount Vernon, at 115 lbs.; and Highland's Emma Bolton at 190 lbs.
In boys competition, Northmor was second in KMAC wrestling and Mount Vernon was tops in the Ohio Cardinal Conference.
The Knox Morrow Athletic Conference tournament at Northmor High School saw the host Golden Knights take second place to winning Elgin. There were winners in every weight class. Among them were Cohan Hurst, Northmor, at 106 lbs.; Brady Carr, Northmor, at 113 lbs.; Cowin Becker, Northmor, at 126 lbs.; C.J. Stoney, Northmor, at 132 lbs.; Carson Campbell, Northmor, at 138 lbs.; Thomas Hause, Centerburg, at 144 lbs.; Caylan LeMaster, Centerburg, at 157 lbs.; Charlie Sargent, Centerburg, at 215 lbs. and Mason Lanthorn, Centerburg, at 128 lbs.
In the Ohio Cardinal Conference High School Tournament at Ashland High School, Mount Vernon won the event with 249.0 points. Ashland was second with 221.5. The Jackets earned five gold medals, three silver and three bronze. Their five champions were Brock Blankenhorn at 110 lbs.; A.J. Fonner at 126 lbs.; Rylan Firebaugh at 132 lbs.; Mason Mitchell at 144 lbs. and Mavrik Gregory at 150 lbs.
At the Licking County League Championship at Utica, the host Redskins placed seventh with 99.5 points. Utica's Clayton Smith won gold at 144 lbs.
At the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference tourney, Highland finished fourth with 167.5 points. Title winners for the Scots were Caleb Wetzel at 132 lbs.; Cael Gilmore at 138 lbs. and Remington Baker at 150 lbs.
