Mount Gilead 54, Ridgemont 23
Mount Gilead (15-5, 9-3) picked up their fifth straight win on Feb. 6 with a 54-23 blowout over winless Ridgemont (0-20, 0-4).
The Indians stormed out of the gate with a 23-5 first quarter-advantage and the scoring barrage continued into the second frame, putting the Mount Gilead squad up 39-9 at the half.
In the third quarter, Mount Gilead scored 11 points and held Ridgemont to four points. While Ridgemont had a 10-4 fourth-quarter scoring advantage, the game was in the hands of the Indians who took a 31-point win.
Mount Gilead sits atop the KMAC standings and has clinched the regular season title.
Wynford 44, Northmor 25
Northmor (9-10, 6-6) struggled to make shots against Wynford on Feb. 6, and the Golden Knights suffered a 44-25 loss.
The game was tied 2-2 in the first quarter when Northmor's Lauren Johnson grabbed a loose ball for a steal. Wynford added a bucket, but with about 5:20 on the clock, Emily Zeger put the Golden Knights up 5-4. Wynford added a 3-pointer to go up 7-5. Defense stepped up as Northmor's Riley Johnson came away with a steal, followed by another steal, this time by Zeger.
The Golden Knights were down 13-7 and Wynford was making a push to increase the lead, but Riley Johnson had other ideas with a blocked shot, recovered by Northmor. With the score 16-7, Wynford was again near the hoop about to score when Maizy Brinkman swatted away a layup. On Wynford’s next possession, Madison Simpson pounced on a loose ball for a steal. With the score 18-8, Emilee Jordan also recorded a steal for Northmor.
Northmor was down by 17 in the fourth quarter when Lauren Johnson showed fight, hitting a wide-open three to make it a 37-23 game. Wynford held on the rest of the way and allowed only one more basket, on the way to a 19-point win.
Simpson had six points, five rebounds, one assist and four steals to lead the way for Northmor. Jordan also had six points and grabbed nine rebounds, with six being offensive boards. She also had a steal.
Clear Fork 45, Cardington-Lincoln 32
The recent struggles for Cardington-Lincoln (10-9, 8-4) continued against Clear Fork (12-6, 8-4) on Feb. 7, with a fourth straight loss, 45-32.
The game was tight in the first quarter, and the Pirates showed tough defense with Samantha Spires and Abigail Hardwick each recording steals at the beginning of the quarter. Hardwick also had a block when Cardington-Lincoln had a 5-4 lead. Hess followed quickly after with a three to make it an 8-4 game, but the Colts would go on a 5-0 run to end the quarter with a 9-8 lead. Hess led the way with five points.
The second quarter was all Colts with a 20-10 advantage to take a 29-18 lead into the half. Spires had a big quarter with six points and ended with seven at the half. Hess and Spires also recorded a steal each for the Pirates.
Spires was the top scorer for the Pirates with 12 points. Lydia Hess had seven points, including the team’s only three, and Genevieve Longsdorf put up seven points.
Despite the four straight losses, Cardington-Lincoln is second in the KMAC standings.
