Northmor 56, Cardington-Lincoln 33
Hunter Fulk led all scorers with a 20-pt. performance for Northmor (3-2, 2-1), propelling the Golden Knights to a 56-33 win over KMAC foe Cardington-Lincoln (5-2, 2-1) on Dec. 13.
Northmor jumped out on top early with a 23-10 advantage after one quarter, in which Fulk scored six points to lead the offense. Isaac Black and Caleb Schnuerer each had five points in the quarter, including three apiece for the Knights. Grant Bentley also hit a three for Northmor.
Cardington-Lincoln had a tough time finding the basket in the second quarter. They were outscored 8-2, with Black and Bentley each scoring three points and Fulk providing the other bucket for the Golden Knights.
The score was 31-12 at halftime, and both teams put 14 points on the board in the third quarter. Fulk drained three shots from downtown in the quarter for the Golden Knights. The Pirates were fueled by Journey Williamson, who hit a three among his seven points.
Northmor held a commanding 45-26 lead heading into the fourth quarter. As they had done most of the night, they dominated the final frame with an 11-7 scoring advantage to seal the win.
Fulk hit four threes in the game for Northmor to carry the offense. On top of his 20 points, he also had two boards, two assists, and three steals. Bentley was the second-leading scorer, with 10 points on the night as well as three boards and a steal. Black pitched in with eight points, two blocks, and an assist.
The Pirates were led by an 11-point night for Williamson, who buried a pair of threes in the game. Warren Garrison added five points for Cardington-Lincoln.
Next up for Northmor is a matchup with Danville for another conference matchup on Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m.
Cardington-Lincoln has a road game against Centerburg (5-1, 4-0) on Dec. 20 at 7:30 p.m.
Mansfield Senior 73, Mount Vernon 57
Despite a 28-point showing by Hudson Rohler, Mount Vernon (4-2, 2-0) had a tough time with Mansfield Senior (2-1), playing close three-quarters before falling 73-57.
Though they never led in the game, the Jackets played a tight game, with Mansfield Senior holding a 16-14 lead in the first quarter and a 32-29 advantage at the half. Mansfield Senior outscored Mount Vernon 22-19 in the third quarter but pulled away in the fourth with a 19-9 advantage.
Caden Rowland scored 11 points as the top scorer for the Yellow Jackets.
Nick Coon, Mount Vernon basketball coach, said the problem was on defense, as the team couldn’t stop the Mansfield scoring charge.
“They did a good job of breaking down our defense and scoring at the rim,” Coon said. “They also hurt us with their size and offensive rebounding. I have to do a better job getting us prepared to guard those types of teams, going forward.”
Fredericktown 72, Danville 61
Fredericktown’s (3-3, 3-0) two-headed monster of Kaid Carpenter and Teegan Ruhl led the team on offense, combining for 43 points in a 72-61 come-from-behind win over KMAC rival Danville (0-4, 0-4), Dec. 13.
Danville went up by 10 in the first quarter, leading 22-12. Walker Weckesser led the way with eight points, including two from downtown. Max Payne also hit a pair of threes for Danville. Carpenter scored seven points in the quarter for the Freddies.
The second quarter was almost an exact flip-flop, with Fredericktown outscoring Danville 24-11 and making it a 36-33 game in favor of the Freddies. Ruhl had six points in the quarter for the Freddies and Weckesser had five points for the Blue Devils.
Fredericktown separated in the third quarter by outscoring Danville 23-14. Ruhl led the way with eight points in the quarter. Weckesser continued his impressive night with 10 points in the quarter, but the rest of the team had trouble scoring.
Danville outscored Fredericktown in the fourth quarter 14-13, but it wasn’t enough to make a comeback; the Freddies secured the win.
Carpenter led all scorers with 24 points on the night, including a pair of threes. Ruhl had 19 points and Lester also hit double figures with 11 points, including a three.
Despite the losing effort, Weckesser continued to shine for Danville with 26 points on the night. Payne had 13 points, including four threes.
Centerburg 63, East Knox 16
Colton Martin has been a driving force in Centerburg’s (4-1, 4-0) hot start this season. Once again, he led the way with 25 points in a blowout 63-16 win over East Knox (1-3, 0-3) – the fourth straight win for the Trojans.
Centerburg had a wide lead from the beginning, with the Trojans taking an 18-6 lead in the first quarter. Martin had eight points in the quarter. The steamrolling continued in the second quarter with Grayson Reynolds going off for 13 points as the Trojans outscored the Bulldogs 20-5 to take a 38-11 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Martin lit up the East Knox defense with 12 points, including a pair of threes. The Trojans outscored the Bulldogs 18-4 in the quarter. The final frame was a 7-1 advantage for the Trojans, who were already well on their way to a big win and stepped off the gas with a running clock.
While Martin led the scoring, Reynolds was a valuable offensive presence with 17 points. Trevin Harris hit double figures with 10 points in the win.
East Knox was led by Jaxon Lester, whose eight points were half the scoring for the Bulldogs.
