Cemetery building, brick street paving contracts addressed

The city is planning cemetery and parking garage projects, plus the fire department is adding resources.

Classical Construction of Apple Creek, Ohio, was awarded the contract for a new maintenance building at Moundview Cemetery.

Though construction will not begin until next spring, the prices for materials are locked in place, Mount Vernon Mayor Matt Starr said. 

Residents will learn what the city’s paving program is expected to cover when the city puts its paving programs out for bid during the last week of December. Bids will be opened a month later.

Parking garage work continues

Work continues on the municipal parking garage in downtown Mount Vernon. Large structural beams were being installed in the southwest corner of the parking garage last week, Starr said.

Part-time firefighter joins MVPD auxiliary force

The Mount Vernon Police Department swore in Bradford Rybak as the newest member of its auxiliary police force on Dec. 6.

Rybak also works as a part-time firefighter with the Mount Vernon Fire Department and a full-time firefighter with the Columbus Fire Department, Starr said. He’s a recent Central Ohio Technical College basic police officer training graduate.

Fire department hires firefighters, orders fire trucks

The fire department welcomed two new part-time team members, Peyton Lester and Luke Whitacre.

It also officially placed an order for a new Rosenbauer engine/rescue and a new Wheeled Coach ambulance, Starr said.

The department’s Toys for Tots donation collection ended on Saturday.

Starrs preside over Snowflake Gala

The Kenyon College Snowflake Gala that benefited Knox County's Food for the Hungry was held Friday night at Kenyon Athletic Center. The mayor and Joanne Starr were the honorary co-chairs. They honored former Mayor Richard K. Mavis as the recipient of the William A. Stroud Jr. Award for Community Service.
