The Christmas events held over the weekend were all about building the community, Lacey Filkins told Mayor Matt Starr.

Filkins, executive director of Experience Mount Vernon, shared with Starr what was special about the weekend’s holiday events. On Saturday, the city held the annual lighting of Public Square. On Sunday, the Christmas Parade was held. Both activities were sponsored by Experience Mount Vernon.

“This event is what it's really all about: building community in downtown and bringing folks to downtown regardless of where they live in Mount Vernon or in Knox County,” Filkins said.

Downtown visitors this weekend could participate in Shop Small Saturday as well as lighting in the square for the parade, she said.

Crews finish with leaves and holiday preparations

Leaf pickup has been completed in Mount Vernon, Starr said. The Street Department will be back to get more leaves if necessary.

Residents can still bring their leaves to the Knox County Yard Waste Facility, 7425 Thayer Road, Mount Vernon. The facility is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Feb. 28.

The Street Department and the Parks Department were busy getting all the Christmas decorations outside of public buildings prepared last week to be ready for Saturday’s lighting of the Public Square.
