MOUNT VERNON – Restrooms at Mount Vernon parks have been closed for the season. Parks Department crews winterized the facilities last week.
“We pretty much anticipated there won’t be much usage at the parks through the winter months,” Safety Services Director Rick Dzik said. “And what that crew has been doing, which is kind of what our streets crews been doing as well is really just trying to get all believe some old stuff in our parks.”
Curb and gutter installed
The city’s Engineering Department was installing a new curb and gutter on East Vine Street at Center Street on Thursday.
“These are some of the things that we can use our stormwater funds for since it helps with how water gets to our stormwater systems,” Dzik said.
It wasn’t too many years ago that the city started collecting stormwater fees from local property owners, he said.
Leaf pickup suffers slowdown
Almost all of the leaves had already fallen off trees in Mount Vernon, which slowed down leaf pickup due to the volume of leaves.
One of the Street Department’s leaf machines broke down, which also slowed the operations, Dzik said. That leaves the city with two working machines until it is repaired.
“There may be some delays with that schedule in terms of pickups, but we’re going to make sure we get through the whole city,” he said.
Residents who still have piles of leaves in December that weren’t picked up can call the city to schedule a pickup.
Crews had picked up 44 loads of leaves in the first three days of last week. As of Thursday, they hadn’t finished their first pass through the city, but once it is done, they’ll make a second pass.
Firefighter-paramedic exam applicants sought
The city seeks applicants for its firefighter-paramedic Civil Service examination, Dzik said. The exam will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 14. Applicants must turn in all materials by 1 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, to be eligible to take the text.
Applications can be picked up at the Office of the Safety Service Director (Room 206) or Civil Service Office (Room 203) City Hall, 40 Public Square, Mount Vernon. Applications can also be printed from the city website at: www.mountvernonohio.org and brought in or mailed.
