To the Editor:
Most Americans want hardworking people to not only survive but to also thrive. Whether we live in the country or the inner city, we understand that we all do better when all citizens have opportunities and can provide for their families.
Unfortunately, many Republicans would have us believe that the only way we are going to thrive is to make sure that big business and wealthy individuals have lots of money and that this wealth will “trickle down” to all the rest of us. But these policies have failed us over the last 40 years. The rich have gotten richer while the rest of us struggle to own a home or keep up with inflation.
Thankfully, over the past century, Democrats have prioritized opportunities and basic security. Democrats led the charge for Social Security, Medicare and Head Start. Democrats continue to demonstrate responsible leadership by both reducing the federal deficit and addressing our problems. Just recently, they have reduced prescription drug costs, funded our crumbling infrastructure, and re-established fairness by raising taxes on billion-dollar corporations.
We can come together to expand opportunities for everyday Americans by voting in November for Democrats like Tim Ryan for the U.S. Senate. Hardworking but strapped Americans deserve to thrive.
