Cardington-Lincoln 3, Centerburg 1

Cardington-Lincoln (16-3, 11-0) faced Centerburg (15-4, 9-2) on Oct. 6 and Madison Linkous and Audrey Brininger had big offensive performances on the way to a 3-1 win to clinch a Lady Pirates' KMAC title for the second year in a row.

The Pirates won the first set 25-19, but then fell 25-23 in the second set. They turned it around in the third set with a 25-11 win and finished with a 25-22 victory.

Brininger had 19 kills and Linkous posted 17 kills to lead the way. Linkous also had two blocks and eight digs, while Brininger added 12 digs. Cadie Long had a huge day defensively with 30 digs, and Payton Goodman added 17 digs. Jadine Mills was a force setting the ball with 59 assists. For Centerburg, Stella Weisbrod had 15 kills. Gwyn Sands had 10 kills, four blocks and two digs. Eva Joering had 21 digs and Kennedi Glenn had seven kills and 18 digs.

“To be able to go back-to-back [winning KMAC titles] is amazing,” Cardington-Lincoln Coach Ryan Treese said. “The girls aren't done yet though. That moves us to 16-3 and 11-0 in the league.”

 

Highland 3, River Valley 0

The Highland Fighting Scots (17-1, 11-0) continued to be a dominating force atop the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference with a sweep victory over a tough River Valley squad on Oct. 6. The first set was tight, but the Fighting Scots were able to squeak by with a 25-23 win. The second and third sets were much more lopsided, with scores of 25-13 and 25-19.

Leading the way for Highland was Kameron Stover with 23 kills, one ace and 10 digs. Larsen Terrill had 40 assists and 16 digs. Zoya Winkelfoos had five kills, 13 digs and two aces. Brooke Schott had nine kills, one ace and a dig. Alexis Eusey had seven kills, one ace and 11 digs. Camryn Miller posted 11 digs, two aces and a kill.

Highland is ranked No. 6 in Division 2.

Newark Catholic 3, Utica 0

Utica 3, Danville 0

Utica (7-13, 4-9) had a road match against Newark Catholic on Oct. 6 and were dominated in a 3-0 victory for the team’s second straight loss. Newark Catholic got better each set posting scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-6 on their way to the win.

For Utica, Ellie Boggs, Abby Buchanan, Alexa Gosnell and Emma Kimpel all had two kills each. Boggs added a block and Kimpel had eight digs. Emilee Ellis had four aces and seven digs.

Utica went on to beat Danville (6-11, 2-9) 3-0 in their next contest on Oct. 8, by scores of 25-23, 25-22 and 25-19. Utica was led by Alexa Gosnell and Emma Kimpel, who each recorded nine kills. Gosnell had six digs. Abby Buchanan and Ellie Boggs each had a block. Carlie Parsons posted five kills and 11 digs.

Lexington 3, Mount Vernon 1

Mount Vernon (11-9, 7-7) traveled to Lexington on Oct. 6 and despite battling hard in the late sets, the Yellow Jackets took a 3-1 loss to the Minutemen.

Lexington won the first two sets 25-13 and 25-18, but Mount Vernon came back and won 25-22 in the third set to make things interesting. Set four went deep with both teams going back and forth, but Lexington took a 29-27 win.

Leading Mount Vernon was Peyja McCord with nine kills and a block. Emma Dean had eight kills, two aces and two digs. Jurnie Gleason, Toni Burdette and Kaitlyn Thompson each recorded seven kills. Madi Rohler had 33 digs in a great defensive performance. Setter Toni Burdette had 20 assists.

Over the weekend Mount Vernon also took a 2-0 loss to Pickerington Central and a 2-0 win over Olentangy Berlin.
