MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Historical Society will hold its next meeting on Wednesday evening, Oct. 5, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Knox County Agricultural Museum, located at the fairgrounds just off Wooster Road, north of Mount Vernon. The meeting is free and open to the public, and all people interested in area history are invited to attend.
The Knox County Agricultural Museum has grown steadily since its beginning more than 35 years ago. In the Loom Room, ladies will be demonstrating weaving techniques by creating rugs throughout the evening.
The main concourse features early transportation, including a 1925 Centerburg school bus, a Doc Fixit farm wagon, a Conestoga wagon, buggies and carriages, and a sleigh. Blacksmith tools and older tractors are at the far end of the main building.
The southwest wing presents many smaller tools, featuring especially those by which old-fashioned framed barns were constructed. Also on display is equipment used to shear sheep and ship their wool – a product for which Knox County was a longtime leader in Ohio and beyond.
The museum also includes several outbuildings, including the schoolhouse, an actual operating spring house, and one of the early Hiawatha amusement park buildings, which are well illuminated internally. Tour guides will be located through the facilities.
