CENTERBURG – It is with great sadness, but an even greater hope that we announce the passing of Velma Jean "Mimi" Compton on Feb. 9, 2022. Jean was born Feb. 17, 1939, in Centerburg where she remained for all of her life. She was the only daughter of Thurman and Velma Pruett who preceded her in death. Jean was a member of the Centerburg Church of Christ and was actively involved in directing the choir and with the music programs there. In the last few years she attended the Johnstown Christian Church and loved and was loved by the people there.

She leaves behind her husband of 62 years, Jack Compton who she began dating at the age of 13, when he kissed her in the cornfield by their house. They rarely spent a day apart in over 70 years. Our family beach vacations, with just the 28 of us in one house, and time spent together with Mimi will always be treasured. Together they have four children: Teri (Don) James, Tonia (Paul) Gregory, John (Karyn) Compton and Jarrod (Kathy) Compton all of whom make their homes close by. She is also survived by twelve grandchildren: Courtney (Tony) Shaver, Cameron (Lindsey) James, Madison, Gunnar, Olivia, and Jack Gregory. Amelia, Hayden, Tanner, Zoe, Sophie and Reed Compton, as well as three great- grandchildren Harlee, Evie and Coulter. Her brother Ron (Sharon) Pruett and his family, sister in law Maryann Pruett, as well as many in-laws, nieces and nephews. All of whom loved her very much. She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brother Keith Pruett.

Jean worked for many places that all had the common theme of helping people. She was a teacher in Centerburg Schools and Dan Emmett Elementary in Mt. Vernon. She was also a substance abuse counselor for adults and had served on the Centerburg Board of Education. One of her most cherished roles was her job as the "Sunshine Lady" as she went throughout schools in the county teaching children self esteem and self worth while combating bullying and sadness. Her true life's work was just making anyone around her feel better about their day as well as about themselves. If you met our Mother, you knew how she loved to share her joy. We were very very blessed to have her in our lives and to call her our Mimi.

There will be calling hours 4-8 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 14, 2022, at the Centerburg Church of Christ, 3830 Columbus Road, Centerburg, OH 43011, and a Funeral Service at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the church as well. Pastor Tony Shaver officiating. Interment Eastview Cemetery.

Our family greatly appreciates all the prayers from our family, friends, church families and the whole community while Mom fought so hard to stay with us. We want you to know that those prayers were answered. Not in defeat, as the world may see it, but in absolute perfect and total healing in Heaven. If you so desire: Donations can be made to Johnstown Christian Church, or by buying school supplies for local children in need in her name. Another way to honor our Mom is to just be really nice to someone today and every other day.

The DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home is honored to serve the Compton family.  Please visit www.snyderfuneralhomes.com to share a memory or condolence with Jean’s family.

Mom, we'll see you again soon.
