MOUNT VERNON – Street Department crews were in the middle of 48 hours of continuous work Friday to keep Mount Vernon streets cleared off.

“We're still pushing snow around until we can actually clear it and it’s melted,” Mayor Matt Starr told the Mount Vernon News.

The city has been dealing with the snow event since it started earlier this week. Trucks were prepared with snowplows attached. The city also took delivery of more salt.

“We still plan to have crews working until midnight tonight. And then after that they'll come in on an as-needed or an on-call basis,” Starr said.

Right now, the work is to get the snow out of the way and melt what’s on the roads. When that can be done, they’ll bring the crews in and start removing snow.

The big thing is for city residents only to go out if necessary. If they do head onto city streets, drive slowly and watch out for other people.

“As my mother always says, watch out for the other guy,” Starr said.

The Street Department doesn’t have totals for salt use yet. But the city is in good shape, he said.
