MOUNT VERNON – Experience Mount Vernon and its Public Arts Committee invites artists of all ages and abilities to submit a proposal for participation in the newest public art project.
Experience prides itself on providing new and exciting ways to involve the community while striving to improve the aesthetic beauty of our downtown corridor. A central theme of walkability and a comprehensive collection of easily accessible and highly visible destinations creates the desire for public art. To meet this desire, Experience Mount Vernon has identified several locations as targets for the new public art pieces.
Local artists living within a 50-mile radius of Mount Vernon are called to submit a proposal for an opportunity to be considered for one or more of the projects. The target areas are all within the Central Business District of downtown and include up to ten (10) metal utility boxes. If approved, the artist will be asked to create a piece cohesive with a theme set by the Public Arts Committee. This piece will be digitally scanned and transferred to a special wrap that will adhere to the boxes. Adding a splash of color and identity, the wraps are also anti-graffiti and anti-stick keeping unwanted messages from making their mark.
Also included in the request is the opportunity for artists within the radius to submit qualifications for consideration for a mural to be painted on the south-facing facade of Williams Flowers & Wine at Main & Vine. Located at 16 S. Main St., this building houses one of the oldest retail shops in our downtown and is located at a high-traffic intersection. The targeted façade is a brick wall with no existing paint or pieces of art. The Public Arts Committee and the owner of the property will have the opportunity to review the submissions, select a candidate and direct the theme of the painting. Letters of recommendation and referrals are highly encouraged for those artists who wish to be considered for the mural.
To be considered for the Public Art Project, interested parties are to download the Request for Proposal (RFP) from the organization’s website, linked here, or stop by the Experience Mount Vernon office at 501 S. Main St. Applicants are asked to submit the completed application in sealed envelopes by 5 p.m. on Feb. 14, 2022. Sealed envelopes can be mailed to (or dropped off to) 501 S. Main St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050. Further instructions and project information can be found in the RFP.
