In the Wednesday, Jan. 5 edition of the Mount Vernon News, we ran a review of the 2021 high school athletics season -- Knox County sports: Highlights of a unique year.
In the recap of boys basketball, we wrote: “A late start and a schedule into the spring saw Fredericktown on top of the Knox Morrow Athletic Conference in 2020-2021, finishing with a 12-1 conference record and 19-3 overall. Second place was Centerburg, followed by Cardington-Lincoln, East Knox, Mt. Gilead, Highland, Northmor and Danville.”
Officials at Centerburg High School submit that they shared co-championship status with Fredericktown.
Our sources
The official KMAC site: https://kmacathletics.org/table/2020-21-boys-basketball-standings// had Fredericktown at 9-0 and Centerburg at 9-3 in conference, with the Freddies at 13-0 for the season and the Trojans at 13-4.
MaxPreps.com had Fredericktown at 19-3 overall and 12-1 in conference. That source also had Centerburg at 11-1 in conference and 14-3 overall, having lost to Fredericktown, Feb. 12 by a score of 59-50.
Contradicting information
However, Centerburg administration contests that overall ranking and claims co-championship status with Fredericktown for the year. Backing them up is an official press release from KMAC that contradicts their website. The press release, written last spring, covering the 2020/2021 KMAC winter sports season, says: “League Champions: Fredericktown and Centerburg.”
The Mount Vernon News applauds Centerburg High School on a fine 2020-2021 boys basketball campaign. Centerburg is off to a 9-1 start and is 6-0 in KMAC games thus far in 2021-2022.
