East Knox tops Granville, 61-47, to remain unbeaten

In a nonconference matchup Saturday, East Knox came from behind to down Granville Christian, 61-47. 

Remaining undefeated at 5-0, the Bulldogs dropped Granville to 1-3, after a tight first quarter that ended with EK on top 9-8. The Bulldogs were outplayed in the second quarter, 20-13, to go into the locker room at halftime down 28-22. The Bulldogs came out shooting in the third and took over with a 20-9 run, led by Sam Whitney and Peyton Lester with seven points each and Ethan Rine with six.

EK withstood 11 points by Granville’s Joe Bennie and countered that with eight from Carson Steinmetz and six from Lester to take home the 14-point victory.

Lester finished with 15 for EK, Rine had 12, Whitney scored 11, and Steinmetz had 10 points.

Mount Gilead 68, Danville 56

A dominating performance from start to finish by Elijah Chafin propelled Mount Gilead to a 68-57 win over Danville on Dec. 17. 

Mount Gilead (4-3, 3-2 KMAC) rode nine points by Chafin in the first to keep the game close and tied at 17 with Danville (2-5, 1-4 KMAC) after one. Walker Weckesser hit six points in the opening frame for the Blue Devils.

Paul Butterman hit two threes in the second en route to a 30-30 halftime tie. Weckesser and Spencer Payne each hit for five for Danville.

The Indians finally pulled away in the third as Chafin added seven and Carter Kennon bombed in two threes for a 49-44 lead. Chafin closed it out with seven more in the fourth as the Indians tacked on 19 points to win by 12.

Chafin led all scorers with 27, Butterman had 17 and Carter Kennon 13 for Mount Gilead.  Weckesser  led Danville with 13, who also got 13 from Spencer Payne and 11 from Max Payne.

Yellow Jackets stay perfect in OCC with 56-50 win over M-M 

 A strong second half erased a 6-point half-time deficit, and Mount Vernon (4-2, 3-0 OCC) beat Mansfield Madison (2-4) 56-50 on Friday to remain unbeaten in conference play.

Mansfield Madison took a 14-11 lead after one and stretched it to 25-19 at the half.

The Yellow Jackets tied it at 35-35 after three and then outscored M-M 21-15 in the decisive fourth quarter for the win. Mount Vernon was led by Beau Bridges with 16 points, Nolan Belcher with 11, Caden Rowland with eight and Owynn Gleason and Trevor Buttke with seven points each. Bridges was also strong on the boards and finished with 12 rebounds.
