ASHLAND – A legacy estate gift from the Herbert L. Heyl Trust in the amount of $131,782 will provide immediate support for comfort care and bereavement services at Hospice of North Central Ohio and fund a new $10,000 NCO memorial endowed fund in Heyl’s name at the Ashland County Community Foundation.

Heyl, who died in November 2020, was a longtime resident of Ashland. He was a Korean War veteran and retired public school teacher. Heyl was a graduate of Ashland High School and Ashland University.

“Endowing our nonprofit organization’s core mission programs continues to be an ongoing strategic objective at Hospice of North Central Ohio,” said Ralph Tomassi, HNCO chief development officer/senior administrator. "We are grateful for Mr. Heyl’s philanthropic heart and his desire to provide a portion of his estate for HNCO.

”It is appropriate that we perpetuate his memory in this community, where he was well-known and respected, through an endowed fund at ACCF.”

Jim Cutright, president/CEO of the Ashland County Community Foundation, said: “ACCF is extremely honored to hold the assets of this newly created endowment fund in memory of Mr. Heyl for the long-term benefit of HNCO. As we know, this is an excellent way to honor this man’s legacy while helping to sustain one of our most important nonprofit community partners.”

Hospice of North Central Ohio has established and funded 21 endowment funds since 2015 and  now has 32 endowment funds totaling over $1.3 million. Funds are managed and administered by community foundations in HNCO’s service areas.
