Bulldogs hold down Indians' offense in 46-28 victory

East Knox (2-0, 2-0 KMAC) showed consistent offensive play and tenacious defense to take down Mount Gilead (2-2, 1-1 KMAC), 46-28, on Dec. 7.

East Knox took a 13-6 lead in the first quarter on scoring from five different players, including five points (one three-pointer) from Dillon Moreland. An 11-2 run to start the second quarter by the Bulldogs put the game out of reach for the Indians at 24-6. EK matched its 13-point first with a 13-point second quarter, getting a three apiece from Moreland, Peyton Lester and Shane Knepp. The half ended with a 26-14 Bulldogs lead.

Knepp took over in the third quarter as East Knox posted its third consecutive 13-point quarter. Knepp rainbowed another three among his eight points in the frame, and Lester drained another three. In the third, the Indians showed some offensive life with nine points on a three apiece from Elija Chafin and Aaron Gannon and a deuce and a free throw from Paul Butterman, but in the fourth, only got a three from Owen High and another two from Butterman

The fourth was a low-scoring quarter with East Knox holding serve, 7-5.

Knepp led all scorers with 18 points for East Knox. Butterman scored 11 points to pace Mount Gilead. Indians top scorer Chafin was held to five points on a three and two free throws.

 

Golden Knights come from behind to take down Freddies with OT buzzer-beater, 56-54

In a tight battle to the final horn of overtime, Northmor (3-1, 2-0 KMAC) topped Fredericktown (2-3, 1-2 KMAC), 56-54, on Tuesday.

A seesaw first half saw both teams go on short runs as the lead changed often. Fredericktown closed out the first with a 14-13 lead, spurred on by six points by Teegan Ruhl and five by Kaid Carpenter. Northmor answered with scoring from five players and got threes from Graesin Cass and Logan Mariotti. Cass hit all of Northmor’s points in the second on a rainbow three. Fredericktown scored only six to take a 20-16 halftime lead, getting a three from Carpenter and a bucket and a free throw from Brady Lester.

Mariotti kicked it up in the third with seven points for Northmor as four Golden Knights did the damage in a 17-16 quarter. Fredericktown held onto its slim lead thanks to nine points by Ruhl and five from Lester.

Down 36-33 entering the fourth, Northmor tied it with a 14-11 quarter.

The game went to OT, and Grant Bentley hit a last-second buzzer-beater three to give the Golden Knights the clutch win.

In the fourth and OT combined, Northmor got two threes and eight points from Bentley, eight more from Max Lower, a three from Hunter Fulk and four points from Cass. The Freddies countered with nine fourth-quarter and OT points from Carpenter, five from Lester and four from Ruhl, and it took a last-second shot to beat them.

Northmor got double-digit scoring from four players: Cass scored 15, Bentley hit for 12, and Mariotti and Lower each tallied 10 points. Fredericktown was led by Ruhl with 19 points, Carpenter with 17 points and Lester with 14.
