Weckesser’s 26 outdone by Bentley’s 29 in Northmor’s comeback win over Danville

Danville’s Walker Weckesser scored 26 points, and the Blue Devils took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter, but a 29-point night by Grant Bentley and a 22-point fourth-quarter onslaught by the Golden Knights took home a come-from-behind one-point victory Dec. 3.

Northmor took a 13-7 led in the first quarter as Bentley drilled two threes. Weckesser scored 14 points in the second as Danville scored 24 to grab a 31-24 lead at halftime, despite two more threes and 15 points at the half by Bentley.

The third was a 12-12 affair, as Weckesser hit seven more and Bentley hit for eight, and the fourth quarter began with the Devil Dogs on top 43-36.

In the fourth, Bentley hit for eight more and teammate Graesin Cass also scored eight to take over the lead and ice the win. Darren Mickley scored five in the fourth to lead Danville.

For the game, Walker Weckesser hit 26 for Danville, Wyatt Weckesser hit 10 and Mickley scored seven. For Northmor, Bentley led all scorers with 29, and Cass scored 12

 

Trojans hold off Worthington charge, 56-48 

The Centerburg Trojans (2-0) withstood a fierce 23-4 third-quarter assault by Worthington Christian (0-4) to take home a 56-48 victory Dec. 2

First, Mckinnon Mead hit two threes, Jake Gregory nailed one from beyond the arc and Alex Johnson and Isiah Reynolds each hit a pair of deuces.

In the second, Mead hit another three, Houck was good for five points and Reynolds was 4-for-4 at the line

Mead scored all four Trojan points in a stifling third quarter. They then came out firing in the fourth as five players contributed in a 19-point frame. Mead nailed another three and two free throws, Houck hit two twos and a pair at the line, and Landon Griffith scored four.

Mead pulled down nine rebounds, Alexander Johnson and Reynolds six and Colton Martin five. Mead was a force in all aspects of the game as he also handed out seven assists and delivered three steals and two deflections on defense.

Top Trojan scorers were Mead with 18 points, Houck with 11 and Reynolds with 10.

 

Utica comes out firing, tops Mt. Gilead, 68-52

In a battle of the Redskins and the Indians on Dec. 4, Utica prevailed, 68-52. 

In the first, Utica came charging out of the gate and scored 27 points to take a 17-point lead. Trenton Collins scored nine in the first for the Redskins, with eight points from Seth Cooper, among the five Utica scorers in the frame.

With scoring from five players, the Indians scored 19 in the second, led by Aaron Gannon with six, and closed the gap at halftime to 40-29 in favor of Utica.

The third quarter ended 51-39, Utica, as Collins added seven.

In the fourth, Utica added to the lead as six players put shots through the net.

Utica saw scoring from eight players. Collins hit for 20, Cooper scored 18, Zach Heckman hit nine, Roman Gamble scored eight, and Brody McDaniel had seven for Utica. Gannon led Mount Gilead with 16 points, Elija Chafin and Carter Kennon each hit 10, and Paul Butterman scored nine.

 

Indians rely on the three to down Freddies, 57-40

Kaid Carpenter scored 20 of Fredericktown’s 40 points, but it wasn't enough to outdistance Mount Gilead’s balanced scoring attack on Dec. 3. 

Mount Gilead got strong performances from Paul Butterman with16 points and Elijah Chafin with 15 points to down Fredericktown, 57-40.   

Carpenter hit 10 first-quarter points, and the two teams were locked in a 16-16 tie after one. The Indians got two threes from Aaron Gannon and one three apiece from Elijah Chafin and Paul Butterman in the first. Two more 3-pointers by Chafin helped Mount Gilead take a 29-28 edge going into the locker room.

The third quarter saw defenses take over as Mount Gilead outscored the Freddies 9-4, with Gannon adding two more from beyond the arc.

The Indians’ offense came to life again on the fourth quarter, getting balanced contribution from five scorers to put up 20 points to eight for the Freddies. Carpenter put up four of the Freddies’ final eight points.
