Freddies pull away from Utica despite 21 from Dickson, then down Danville

In a game Nov. 29 that saw Fredericktown slowly and methodically pull away, the Freddies (2-1) defeated Utica (0-1) in their home opener, 53-34. The Freddies led 10-8 after one and 21-14 at the half.

Cally Carpenter hit for five points in the first quarter, and hit a three in the second. Audrey Bouton hit a couple of deuces in the second.

Utica lived and died by the three in the first half, with 12 of their 14 points coming from behind the arc. Abby Dickson hit three of them and Jodie Mueller hit one, while Delaney Kerstetter hit a 2-pointer.

The Freddies increased their advantage to 35-25 after three quarters, then dominated the final frame with an 18-9 output to win by 19.

Gabby Daniels came out firing in the third with six points and added two more in the fourth, which was spearheaded by Jill Bouton’s seven, including a rainbow three. Dickson kept pace for Utica with six points in the third and five (including another three) in the fourth.

In a balanced attack, the Freddies received scoring contributions from six girls. Gabby Daniels hit 13, Jill Bouton scored 11, Audrey Bouton and Carpenter hit for eight, Grace Sipes scored seven and Annie Maglott scored six.

For Utica, the scoring was centered around Dickson, who scored 21, while no other Utica girl scored more than four (Kerstetter).

Two days later, coming off a 66-43 win over Northridge, Danville (1-2) started slowly, came back to tie, then fell to Fredericktown (3-1), 52-42 on Wednesday night.

In a seesaw battle, Fredericktown jumped out to an 18-8 first-quarter lead over visiting Danville only to have the Lady Blue Devils put on a 15-5 second-quarter show to tie the score at halftime, 23-23. The Freddies then took charge in the third with a 16-8 run and closed it out with a 13-11 fourth to finish the scoring at 52-42.

The Freddies got scoring from five girls, and Audrey Bouton scored all nine of her points in the first quarter to propel Fredericktown from the opening tip. Then, in the third quarter, it was the Gabby Daniels show as she hit five deuces to put Fredericktown on top for good. Grace Sipes hit six points in the fourth to put the game on ice.

Daniels scored a game-high 19 points, Sipes had 14 and Bouton was good for nine for the Freddies.

Taking a small 13-6 first-quarter lead with balanced scoring from four girls, C-L rampaged the next three quarters, outscoring the Golden Knights 17-8 in the second for a 30-14 halftime advantage, then romping 23-10 in the third and 21-3 in the fourth to win by 47 points.

The second quarter saw Kambry Edwards, Karsyn Edwards and Dana Bertke each hit a three, and in the third quarter, Bertke took the game over with four deuces and a three. Reagan Swihart scored seven of Northmor’s 10 third-quarter points. The fourth quarter saw scoring from six Lady Pirates.

East Knox Lady Bulldogs hold off Centerburg, 51-47

Centerburg’s Lady Trojans started slowly and made a strong charge in the second half but fell to the East Knox Lady Bulldogs 51-47 in KMAC play.

East Knox (1-1) took a 12-7 led in the first quarter against Centerburg (0-3). Holding the Lady Trojans to only four points in the second, EK took a 25-11 led to the locker room at halftime. The Centerburg second-half charge started with a 15-12 third-quarter advantage, and an all-out assault in a 21-14 fourth quarter fell just short and saw the 14-point halftime deficit whittled to four points at the end.

The Lady Bulldogs saw balanced scoring throughout with baskets from four different girls in the first quarter, six different scorers in the second, five girls in the third and six in the fourth. The Lady Trojans were balanced as well, with three scorers in the first, two in the second, four in the third and five scorers in the fourth quarter, though high-scorer Chloe Goulter poured in nine fourth-quarter points in leading the charge that fell just short.

EK got scoring from eight Lady Bulldogs and was led by Alexandria Magers with 12 points. Laura Keith had eight, and Shanda Melick and Anjel Montgomery each scored six.
