MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Career Center (KCCC) has been recognized for its success with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS).
PBIS involves teaching students what are expected behaviors in a consistent and positive way, modeling and acknowledging those behaviors, and helping students to meet expectations and be successful.
PBIS has been shown to improve student achievement, student behavior and school climate. In 2015, Ohio PBIS Network first recognized schools that were model examples of strong PBIS.
In 2021, KCCC applied and earned the Silver Recognition Award. KCCC is one of 70 award-winning schools to be recognized at the Silver Level. 354 schools were recognized, with 34 at the Gold Level, 70 at the Silver Level and 233 at the Bronze Level.
KCCC will be honored at the 2021 Ohio PBIS Showcase in conjunction with the Ohio Leadership Advisory Council (OLAC) virtual conference on Dec. 9.
“I am excited that our school has earned this award. This was our sixth year of implementation, and there are many requirements that must be met and documented to receive this recognition from the state,” said Amy Rine, KCCC District PBIS coach.
“Amy and the PBIS committee work very hard at reviewing data and then looking for ways to encourage students in the Four As: achievement, attendance, attitude and appearance. Their work makes a difference in all of our lives,” said Kathy Greenich, KCCC superintendent.
The Knox County Career Center has participated in a formal PBIS program for six years. Monthly meetings are held to review and analyze behavioral data and to promote a positive school climate. KCCC provides support to its students by utilizing Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III behavioral interventions. Rewards and incentives are available to students who achieve high levels of success in the areas of attendance, achievement, appearance, and attitude.
The 2020-2021 KCCC PBIS committee consisted of the following members: Dashua Allbaugh, Nate Bellman, Renee Blaney, Derek Fisher, Cassie Gray, Nate Greene, Jane Hall, Heidi Hudepohl, Lydia King, Stacy Kladias, Beth Marhefka, Jamie Metzger, Melissa Nowicki, Jim Riggle and Amy Rine.
