GAMBIER – Philip J.  “Phil” Butta Sr., 88, of Gambier passed away on Tuesday morning, Oct. 26, 2021, at Knox Community Hospital. He was born on Aug. 27, 1933, in Hoboken, N.J., to the late Salvatore and Francesca (Calabro) Butta.

Phil graduated from New York University with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He worked for several companies over the years and retired from the Ariel Corporation in Mount Vernon. Phil was a faithful member of Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church in Mount Vernon, the Holy Name Society in New Jersey and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He enjoyed woodworking and restoring cars and tractors that include his Jaguar and his wife Joan’s Mustang.

Phil is survived by his wife of over 67 years, Joan H. (Hayden) Butta, whom he married on Sept. 4, 1954; children, Salvatore Butta of Amherst, N.Y., Philip (Christina) Butta Jr. of Middleboro, Mass., Francine Butta of Little Rock, Ark., James Butta of North Little Rock, Ark., and Karen (Les) DeWalt of Cartersville, Ga.; eight granddaughters; four grandsons; and six great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Phil was preceded in death by a sister, Marie Auteri.

The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Flowers-Snyder Funeral Home, 619 East High St., Mount Vernon.  A prayer service will follow the visitation.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30, with Rev. Father Dan Olvera as the Celebrant. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Gambier.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Saint Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 303 East High St., Mount Vernon, OH 43050, or the charity of your choice in Phil’s memory.
