Yellowjackets overrun by Lexington Minutemen, 40- 14
The Mount Vernon Yellowjackets' defense could not contain the Lexington Minutemen offense and fell at home, 40-14, Sept. 10 in an Ohio Cardinal Conference game.
Lexington was in command all the way, taking a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and going into the locker room at halftime ahead 26-7. After a scoreless third quarter dominated by the defenses, the 'Jackets were outscored 14-7 in the fourth quarter for a 40-14 final score in favor of Lexington.
Lexington outgained Mount Vernon 356 yards to 194. The Yellowjackets picked up 125 in the air and 69 on the ground, while allowing the Minutemen 242 passing yards and 114 rushing yards. Mount Vernon converted 3 of 13 third downs and did not turn the ball over, while Lexington was 6 for 10 but turned the ball over twice – one fumble and one interception.
Mount Vernon’s top performers included junior quarterback Joel Hubbard, who completed 54.5 percent of his passes for 125 yards; sophomore wide receiver Jonny Askew, who hauled in eight receptions for 82 yards; and junior running back Evan Owens, who carried the ball 12 times for 75 yards.
Mount Vernon dropped to 1-3 on the year and 0-1 in the OCC, while Lexington moved to 2-2 and 1-0.
Danville jumps out to big halftime lead, coasts to 28-21 win over Fredericktown
The Danville Blue Devils evened their record at 2-2 (1-0) in the KMAC, and the Fredericktown Freddies dropped to 2-2 (0-1) as Danville prevailed 28-21. The game was close in some aspects as the Blue Devils ran 53 plays to the Freddies’ 54, and first downs were 10-9 with Danville in front, while Danville outgained the Freddies 325 yards to 222.
The Blue Devils jumped out to a 7-0 lead at the quarter, and put the game away with a 28-7 half-time lead, giving up a score in each of the last two quarters to allow The Freddies to pull within a score at the end.
On defense, Danville junior Levi Lyons defensed two passes, recovered a fumble, hurried the quarterback twice and led Danville with 14 tackles. On offense, Blue Devils sophomore quarterback Walker Weckesser completed 16 of 27 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns and gained 65 yards on the ground. His favorite target was junior Kaiden Colopy, who caught six passes for 119 yards and two TDs. For Fredericktown, junior quarterback Kaid Carpenter rushed for 55 yards and completed 8 of 14 passes for 92 yards, junior Teegan Ruhl gained 64 yards rushing and junior Xavier Mullins led the Freddies with 41 yards on four receptions.
Northmor Golden Knights hold off Cardington-Lincoln Pirates 21-14
Northmor scored twice in the first half in last Friday’s game at Cardington-Lincoln, then held on to emerge with a 21-14 victory.
The Golden Knights began the scoring with 2:56 left in the first quarter on a 1-yard run by Max Lower and added a tally with 2:44 left in the first half to make it 14-0 on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Gavin Whited.
Northmor made it 21-0 in the third quarter on a 15-yard pass from Marcus Cortez to Andrew Armrose, but the Pirates broke through about two minutes later on a 48-yard TD pass from Nate Hickman to Ayden Plowman with 2:08 left.
Cardington-Lincoln made it close midway through the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run by Kaiden Beach and a two-point conversion run by Plowman to close to 21-14, but defenses held the rest of the way.
Northmor outgained C-L 274 yard to 214, and managed 17 first downs to 14 by the Pirates.
