MVNU athletes honored for stellar performances

MOUNT VERNON – A pair of athletes are making the student body proud at Mount Vernon Nazarene University.

Ellie Ruby and Joshua Dunn were honored by the Crossroads League Players in women’s volleyball and men’s soccer, respectively.

Ruby, a senior libero, was named Crossroads League Defender of the Week after her performance at the Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tournament in Upland, Ind., on Aug. 27 and 28. Ruby recorded 90 digs in four matches, averaging more than six digs per set, as the Cougars went 4-0 in the tournament. Her highlight was a 29-dig performance against Concordia on Day 2 of the tournament.

Earlier this season, Ruby set a milestone when she recorded her 1,500th career dig during a victory over Cornerstone on Aug. 20. On the season, Ruby has 215 digs and has already accumulated a career-high 37 assists.

The Cougars are currently 12-1 this season, including 1-0 in Crossroads League play. They host Huntington on Friday.

Dunn, a senior goalkeeper, was named Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week by the Crossroads League. Dunn made nine saves and allowed two goals as the Cougars went 2-0 over the week. He helped MVNU to a 6-2 victory over Shawnee State before leading his team to a 4-0 shutout over Rochester. In that match, Dunn saved all five shots on goal.

For the season, Dunn has allowed two goals in two-plus matches with 10 total saves.

Dunn, a native of Edinburgh, Scotland, was a four-time letter winner in soccer in high school. He is currently on the Dean’s List.

The Cougars are currently 3-0 on the season. They play Thomas More University on Saturday.
