MOUNT VERNON – The Knox County Park District is offering a new chance for youth anglers to compete at the upcoming tournament at Ariel-Foundation Park.

According to a KCPD press release, the Aug. 28 competition (8 a.m. to noon) is one of two remaining this summer.

Anglers compete through an online app called Fish Donkey, downloaded to a mobile device. This software will keep track of each angler's success as he or she catches the fish, identifies the species and measures its length.

Contestants must upload a picture of the fish and the angler holding it. They can keep aware of their scores and rankings via a live leaderboard available through the app.

Here are the rules:

  • You must fish on a Knox County body of water..
  • If it's on public lands, the angler must have a fishing license (16 and older)
  • Fish must be in one of these species categories: bluegill, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, catfish, carp and any other fish.
  • You must measure the fish length, so a required measuring device is essential.
  • Each fish caught will be recorded on the leaderboard.
The Kokosing Valley Jr. Anglers Youth Club will loan out rods for the competition. Two kinds of bait are acceptable: live or artificial.

Ariel-Foundation Park sponsors the tournament prizes and awards each winner with a $25 gift card. A grand prize drawing will be held at the conclusion of the series for any youth who participated in these events. $50 gift cards will be awarded whether entries landed a fish or not if their name is drawn.

For more information about the tournaments or to register, visit the Knox County Park District Facebook page under Events or go to its website at knoxcountyparks.org and click on events.
