Despite fears the pandemic would dampen donations, this year’s Go Pink for a Cure golf scramble on June 26 raised $32,000, besting last year’s total by $5,000.
The turnout pleasantly surprised event organizers, who feared the worst given the past year’s shutdown status.
“Our response has been tremendous,” said Barbara Barry, organizing committee chair. “We really did not know what to expect, but this community has always been supportive.
In all, 19 foursomes took to the greens for nine holes of fun. Inside the clubhouse, 27 card players were on hand to play euchre, bridge and mahjong. Beautifully themed raffle baskets were displayed, and an excellent luncheon was served.
As they do every year, the committee recognized breast cancer survivors. Carol Sue Owens assured those survivors gathered at the event that they do not walk alone, and she presented each one with a commemorative pin. This year’s Go Pink honoree was Nanette Black, who thanked participants for their support. Kelly Downey, RN, the breast health navigator for Knox Community Hospital, said funds generated by the event would directly benefit the patients.
