MOUNT VERNON – Summertime is almost here!

That means walking and swimming in the bright sun. Or maybe you like to ride a bike or spend your day boating and fishing with friends. Each of these fun activities is part of the rhythm of summer. But this outdoor fun also exposes us to plenty of sunshine — which is good, if we take the necessary precautions while soaking up the sun’s rays.

An annual skin check is a must because it keeps tabs on any changes that sun exposure causes. Generally, most dermatologists recommend that patients begin annual skin checks in their mid-20s. This helps map out any existing moles and spot sun damage so that skin changes can be monitored over time.

Knox Community Hospital proudly offers convenient dermatological care on our medical campus. Dr. Kathleen Rogers is a board-certified dermatologist who recommends the following safeguards:

  • Wear sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher daily.
  • Stay out of tanning beds.
  • Simplify your skincare routine.
  • Choose products that suit your skin type.
  • Use a lip balm with an SPF 30 or higher.
  • Avoid touching your face.
  • Make an annual skin exam appointment.
