MOUNT VERNON – Bird launched its transportation alternative in Mount Vernon last week with 25 scooters for residents to use to run errands, get to work or just cruise around town.
“A growing list of cities, states and countries are looking to micromobility alternatives, such as scooters and bikes, not only as a means of minimizing congestion but also as a way to maintain current social distancing norms,” the Bird team said. “We are excited to work with the city of Mount Vernon to offer residents safe and sustainable transportation during the pandemic and beyond.”
The City signed a memorandum of understanding with the company that allows up to 50 scooters in Mount Vernon, Mayor Matt Starr said. A private entrepreneur brought the scooters to the city. The City is not making money on this venture and is not in the business of operating scooters.
Health care and emergency workers can ride for free with Bird until the COVID crisis has ended. To sign up, email a copy of a medical identification card along with name and phone number to together@bird.co. Eligible riders will receive two free 30-minute rides per day.
A Community Pricing Program offers a 50% discount to low-income riders, Pell Grant recipients, select local nonprofit and community organizations, veterans and senior citizens. To download the Bird app, create an account and email proof of eligibility to access@bird.co.
It costs $1 to unlock a Bird, and then a 39-cent per-minute charge is assessed.
Users must download the app and set up payment options. With the app opened, the nearest Bird can be found. Press the large button at the bottom of the app screen to scan the scooter’s QR code. The alpha-numeric code located just below the QR code can be manually entered.
One person can activate a number of Birds with the Group Ride function, though all riders must verify they are legally authorized to ride.
Kick forward to gain momentum before using the thumb accelerator to control your speed. Applying pressure to the handbrake brings the scooter to a stop.
