MOUNT VERNON – Mount Vernon doubles tandem Brian Sabula and Alex Buehrer placed fourth in the Ohio Cardinal Conference tournament on Saturday, May 8, at Memorial Park and MVNU.
The Yellow Jackets placed fifth as a team with 14 points, behind OCC champion Lexington (60).
Wooster (40) was second, West Holmes (26.5) was third, Ashland was fourth (26), Mansfield Madison was sixth (5) and Mansfield Senior finished seventh (1).
Sabula and Buehrer defeated West Holmes’ Judd Morris and Trevor Miller in the first round of the No. 1 doubles tournament. Lexington’s Ryan Mecurio and Ross Drlik defeated Sabula and Buehrer 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinal, and Parker Harris and Seth Karnosh of Ashland won the third-place matchup 8-1.
In No. 1 singles, Mount Vernon’s Jack Staats was fifth. He fell to Wooster’s Mark Wood 6-2, 7-5 in the first round. Staats defeated Mansfield’s Hyzhon Toddie 8-0 in the first round of the consolation and CJ Steffey 8-2 in the fifth-place matchup.
Quinn Hoffman also placed fifth for the Jackets in No. 2 singles. He fell to Ashland’s Cooper Glazier 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round, then beat Mansfield’s Andrew Cawrse 8-1 and Madison’s Will Lashley for fifth place.
Wade Brown lost to West Holmes’ James Barr in the No. 3 singles and finished fifth — as did Ethan Jarosz and Toby Boggs, who fell to Brody Schead and Jacob Miller of West Holmes in the No. 2 bracket.
No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles did not have enough competitors for a consolation bracket.
