The average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Mount Vernon this week was $3.10, more than double what it was a year ago during the opening months of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data from GasBuddy.com.
With the average weekly gas price in the region a year ago at $1.49, the year-over-year increase was 108%.
Among the gas stations reporting price data for the week of May 3, the service station at Walmart had the lowest average price, $2.84 per gallon, while the Sunoco station on Sandusky Street posted the highest average price at $3.25.
Nationwide, the average price of gas is $2.90 per gallon, according to the most recent data reported by GasBuddy.com. The website said gas prices have been rising over the past several months, with more consumers taking to the roads.
In some regions of the country, gas prices have surpassed price records set prior to the pandemic, according to GasBuddy.com, which has also reported a correlation between aggressive driving and high gas prices.
