Roundup: Printz, Householder pitch Dogs to wins over Devils

Sam Printz and Bryar Householder turned in two solid pitching performances to lead East Knox to a pair of wins over rival Danville.

Printz had six strikeouts in a two-hit, 10-0 six-inning shutout at Danville in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Thursday, May 6.

A day earlier, Householder tallied 16 strikeouts to lead the Bulldogs to a 2-1 win over the Blue Devils on Wednesday, May 5, in Howard.

Householder had three hits and scored twice, and Teddy Sears drove in two runs and scored twice on two hits in Thursday’s game.

Householder allowed one unearned run on three hits and a walk in a complete game on Wednesday. Weston Melick had two hits and scored a run, and Sears drove in both runs — one on a groundout in the first inning and the other on a sacrifice fly in the third to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

Preston Brady had two hits to lead the Devils’ offense, and Walker Weckesser allowed two earned runs over six innings but suffered the loss in Wednesday’s pitching duel.

Trevor Sturgeon led off the sixth inning with a base hit and came around to score on a Gavyn Lepley groundout to get Danville on the board.

Wyatt Weckesser and Walker Weckesser accounted for both Danville hits on Thursday.

Fredericktown 14, Centerburg 3

Kaid Carpenter did it at the plate and on the mound to lead Fredericktown to a 14-3 victory at Centerburg on Thursday, May 6. The win keeps the Freddies in a first-place tie atop the KMAC standings.

Carpenter allowed three earned runs on three hits with nine strikeouts on the mound and added two hits and four RBIs at the plate.

Lincoln Cunningham was also solid with three hits and three RBIs for the Freddies.

Grayson Reynolds drove in two runs on a single and scored a run to lead the Trojans.

Highland 6, Northmor 3

Rider Minnick broke a 1-1 tie with a three-run home run in the fourth inning, and Highland stayed in a first-place tie in the KMAC with a 6-3 win at Northmor on Thursday, May 6, in Galion.

Jon Jenson had two hits and scored twice, and Wyatt Groves allowed one earned run over six innings to get the win for the Fighting Scots.

Grant Bentley went the distance for the Golden Knights but suffered the loss.

Utica splits in LCL play

Brock Pfister struck out eight batters to lead Utica to an 8-1 win over Lakewood in Licking County League play on Thursday, May 6, at American Legion Post 92 Field.

Hunter Billman and Roman Gamble had two hits each for Utica. Billman scored three runs and Gamble drove in two.

Licking Heights scored four times in the first inning and added two more in the second to cruise to a 7-1 win over host Utica in Licking County League play on Wednesday, May 5.

Ethan Francis went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run; and Alex McCord allowed one unearned run in a three-hitter over seven innings to lead the Hornets. 

Billman led Utica with two hits.

Bloom-Carroll 6, Mount Vernon 0

Michael Malone broke the seal with a two-run double and Bloom-Carroll put up all six runs in the fifth inning to beat Mount Vernon 6-0 in non-league play at Beavers Field in Lancaster.

Joshua Moore allowed five hits over five innings and added two hits and an RBI to pace the Bulldogs.

Jonny Askew and Dayne Burgess had two hits each for the Yellow Jackets.

 

TRACK AND FIELD

Jay Figgins won both distance races and Chandler Hartman took the throwing events to lead Utica at the Newark Catholic Invitational on Tuesday, May 4.

Figgins won the 1,600-meter (4 minutes, 45.66 seconds) and the 3,200-meter (10:28.79), and Hartman took top honors in the shot put (43 feet, 9.5 inches) and the discus (122-5).

The Utica boys team (101 points) was fourth out of seven teams, behind winner Johnstown (176); and the girls team (68) was fourth out of six teams, behind the Johnnies (182.5).

Logan Scarberry, Gavin Rutter, Austin Kennedy and Brayden Rickets finished first in the 4x800-meter relay (9:20.86); and Laura Brubaker was first in the pole vault (9-0) to round out the winners for Utica.
