CENTERBURG – JoAnn (Looney) Smith, 70, of Centerburg, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday morning, May 4, 2021, at her residence. She was born on Aug. 28, 1950, in Taswell County, Virginia, the only daughter of the late Melvin Ray and Lena M. (Matney) Looney.

JoAnn graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1968. She met and later married Lawrence, who survives.

JoAnn and Lawrence were hog- and grain farmers, raising hogs for over 20 years. They were blessed to have their daughter, Stephanie; and they would travel sometimes two states away to compete in hog shows. JoAnn was a hard worker and enjoyed helping wherever she could.

When she wasn’t out on the farm helping, JoAnn was baking. She was known for her custard pies and rice pudding that she always made from scratch. She enjoyed spending time with her daughter and grandchildren. Those close to her will remember her as the loving, caring, hard-working wife, mother and grandmother that she was.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence; her daughter, Stephanie (Adam) Tudor, who was her proudest achievement; grandchildren, Wyatt, Evan and Rebecca Tudor; brother, Rick (Trina) Looney; sister-in-law, Marcella Kiracofe; and close family friend, Frank Kroniger.

JoAnn was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Melvin Ray Looney Jr.; and brothers-in-law, Russell (Evelyn) Smith and Harlan Kiracofe.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 10, at the DeVore-Snyder Funeral Home, where family and friends may gather from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow at Mount Pleasant Church Cemetery in Sunbury.
