Softball roundup: Burdette, Pentz help Jackets roll over Knights

Maddy Burdette and Mollie Pentz both homered, and the Mount Vernon softball team is within a game of clinching the Ohio Cardinal Conference after a 16-2 win in five innings on Wednesday, April 28, in Millersport.

Pentz, Makaylia Schlosser and Layne Cook led the Yellow Jackets with three hits each, and Rhyli Pope tossed a complete game.

Mackenzie Rine tossed a two-hit shutout to lead host Mount Vernon over the Knights 14-0 in five innings on Tuesday, April 27.

Carlena Fiorilli had two hits, three runs and two RBIs for the Jackets, who scored five runs in the second inning and added five more in the third to break the game open.

Utica 4, Licking Valley 3

Ryleigh Lees’ RBI double in the sixth inning ended up being the game winner in Utica’s 4-3 win over Licking Valley in Licking County League play on Wednesday, April 28, at South End Park.

Lees helped herself out with the big hit as she held the Panthers to two earned runs in a complete game from the circle. Kiera Williams and Hannah Shaver had two hits apiece to back her efforts for Utica.

Fredericktown 8, Northmor 2

Jesenia Montalvo had three hits, including an RBI single in the second inning that gave Fredericktown the lead. Alyssa Perkins made it stand with a complete game to lead the host Freddies to an 8-2 win over Northmor in Knox Morrow Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, April 28.

Perkins struck out five and allowed two unearned runs, and Montalvo scored four runs for Fredericktown.

Chloey Keen had two hits and scored a run to lead the Golden Knights.

East Knox 13, Mount Gilead 3 (5)

East Knox pounded out five hits with two outs in the third inning to break away from Mount Gilead. The 10-run frame propelled the Bulldogs to a 13-3 win in five innings in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 28, in Howard.

Hannah McCoy, Shanda Melick and Kayla Finch each drove in two runs on two hits. Finch allowed one earned run over four innings to notch the win for East Knox.

Trojans fall in extras at Orange

Amelia Smith had three hits and drove in a run, but Centerburg fell 4-3 on a Kennedy Reed walk-off single in the eighth inning at Olentangy Orange in non-league play on Tuesday, April 27, in Lewis Center.

Smith hit an RBI double and later scored on a passed ball to give Centerburg a 3-1 lead in the fifth.

But Riley Jestadt and Morgan Powell each had RBI hits in the bottom half of the inning to knot the score once again.

Hailee Edgell jump-started Cardington in a big way with a two-run home run as part of a four-run first inning. Genevieve Longsdorf tossed a one-hitter to lead the Pirates to a 10-0 win in five innings over host Centerburg in KMAC play on Wednesday, April 28.

Edgell finished with three RBIs, and Chelsey Miller and Riley Burchett had two hits each to lead Cardington. Miller added two RBIs and Burchett scored twice.

Allie Beekman had the only hit for the Trojans, a double with one out in the fifth inning to break up Longsdorf’s perfect game bid.
