MOUNT VERNON – The Mount Vernon Nazarene University men’s lacrosse team had four players — Johnny Grumney, Ian Ranck, Micah Rex and Kaelin Tran — receive honors from the Association of Independent Institutions.
Grumney, a midfielder, racked up a team-high 19 goals for the Cougars on 80 shots. Of his 80 shots, nearly 70% of them were on goal. He finished the season first in the NAIA in shots on goal per game with 7.9. He also finished the season ranked second in the NAIA with 11.4 shots per game.
Ranck was very solid for the Cougars this season, making the All-Conference team at the attack position. He was a huge threat offensively with eight goals on the year, including four in the last game of the season. He also racked up 15 assists, with multiple assists in five of the nine games in which he played. Ranck finished the 2021 season with 50 shots, 70% of them being on goal.
The third MVNU player to be named to the All-Conference team was Micah Rex, who held down the fort on the defensive end. Rex was strong all season, forcing teams to turn the ball over and take bad shots. He also came up with a lot of ground balls for the Cougars, racking up 32 on the year.
The final Cougar lacrosse player to receive honors was Kaelin Tran. He was named All-Conference as a long-stick midfielder. The freshman played in every game this season and was solid, showing that he can be an impact player for the next three years of his career at MVNU.
