The Mount Vernon High School softball program provided a glimpse into its future as 12 incoming freshmen participated in the Yellow Jackets’ annual softball camp.
According to Kendall Melton, one of the promising athletes, the camp was an exciting challenge. "I was so excited. It’s tough, and I want to win," she said, emphasizing that the camaraderie among team members is enhancing her transition to high school. "All the girls are so nice, and I’m going into high school. That makes it even more exciting."
Melton also commended head coach Ryan Pentz for fostering a supportive and competitive environment. "Coach Pentz is big on media and celebrating other people’s successes," she said. "I’ve learned a lot of different ways to hit and field."
Alexis Ringwalt, another incoming freshman inspired by the camp, highlighted the importance of mindset with a reference to "Muditā." She explained, "Muditā—it has a good meaning behind it, and everyone should apply it." Her aspirations include making varsity, improving her skills, and deepening her passion for the game.
Senior Hailey Rudrick reflected on her own experience at her first camp and now enjoys mentoring younger players. "We tell them to compete like they’re used to but bring it into the high school atmosphere," Rudrick said.
Pentz emphasized the significance of the camp in building team culture: "In these first three days, I can already tell—they like to win."
