Roundup: East Knox sets new highs at John McDonough Invite

The East Knox track and field team set a pair of records at Crestline’s John McDonough Invitational on Tuesday, April 13.

Dillon Moreland ran the 800-meter in 2 minutes, 6.27 seconds; and the 4x800-meter relay team of Isaiah Kohl, Gaetano Capodicasa, Seth Madden and Lucas Bernard set a new meet record with a time of 9:30.26 to lead the Bulldogs.

Cardington’s Loey Hallabrin had quite a record-setting day of her own. She broke the meet records in the 800-meter run (2:30.6), the 1,600-meter run (5:33.98) and teamed with Hazel Joliff, Bella Scurllock and Alexis Crane for the 4x400-meter relay (4:40.72).

Tyler Rose broke the meet record in the 200-meter dash (23.95); and Mason White set the record in the 1,600-meter run (4:45.88) and teamed with Kaleb Meade, Mike Rose and Tyler Rose to set the record in the 4x400 for the Pirates.

The East Knox boys team finished third out of seven teams with 115 points, behind meet winner Loudonville (152).

The Bulldogs’ girls team placed fourth out of six teams with 96 points, behind the Redbirds (169).

The Cardington boys team (128) and girls team (109) both finished second.

Emily Opfer won the 100-meter dash (13.27) and the 300-meter hurdles (51.07) to lead the East Knox girls team.

Other first-place finishers for the Bulldogs were Nathan Streby in the 400-meter (54.54) and the 3,200-meter run (10:40.16), along with the 4x200-meter team of Terry Jacobs, Brayden Lemley, Elijah Carter and Mitchell Williams (1:44.76).

Also finishing first for the Pirates were Joliff in the long jump (15 feet, 0.75 inches) and Morgan White in the 3,200-meter (12:55.79).

Fredericktown quad

Fredericktown took 16 events, sweeping four of them to win its home quad meet on Tuesday, April 13.

The Freddies’ girls team scored 99.5 points to edge by Whitehall (84.5), Northmor (51) and Danville (21).

The Fredericktown boys team (102) beat out the Golden Knights (60), the Rams (48) and the Blue Devils (38).

The Freddies swept the 4x800 relay, with the team of Natalie VanMeter, Abby Wilson, Olivia Umfleet and Kelly Sapp (11:57) taking the girls race and the team of Thomas Caputo, Titus Krabill, Xavier Platt and Owen Krabill (9:08.74) winning the boys.

Elsa Hoam (5:40.95) and Owen Krabill (4:59.78) each won the 1,600; Celeste Swihart (10-0) and JJ Grennell (10-0) each won the pole vault; and Summer Weller (32-9) and Jeremiah McKinley (37-8) won the shot put.

Other individual winners were Caputo in the 3,200 (10:45.82), Ashley Cockrell in the 100-meter hurdles (16.22), Sydney Wilson in the 800 (2:42.09), Audrey Bouton in the high jump (4-6) and Joshua Rashley in the discus (119-7.5).

In relays; Grennell, McKinley, Billy Woodring and Logan Small teamed up to take the 4x200 (1:39.93); Billy Woodring, Small, Grennell and Justin Woodring won the 4x100 (49.03); and Hoam, Cockrell, Sydney Wilson and Kacie Rook won the 4x400 (4:36.94).

Northmor winners included Gavin Miller in the 110-meter hurdles (16.54) and the 300-meter hurdles (45.51), Kooper Keen in the 800 (2:12.93), Julia Kanagy in the 3,200 (13:32.21) and Kahlen Ball in the discus (94-6.5).

Danville winners were Alenah Boeshart in the 100 (13.18), Ella Proper in the 400 (71.77), Brooklynn Hess in the 300-meter hurdles (53.63) and Aiden Bell in the long jump (18-7).

Mansfield Senior tri-meet

McKenna Brokaw competed in four events and won four events to lead the Mount Vernon track and field team against host Mansfield Senior and Team FCA on Tuesday, April 13, in Mansfield.

Brokaw took first in the 200-meter (27.75), the 100-meter hurdles (17.28), the 300-meter hurdles (52.62) and the long jump (16-0.5) to lead the Yellow Jackets, who swept the tri-meet. The girls team scored 136 points to beat FCA (26) and the Tygers (8), and the boys team scored 108.5 to best Senior (52.5) and FCA (14).

Alexis Strong also had a solid meet for the girls team. She won the 400 (1:07.81) and was a part of two winning relay teams: the 4x100 (59.91) with Elizabeth Miller, Kaylee Middleton and Sarah Phillips; and the 4x200 (2:01.56) with Middleton, Miller and Olivia Ferguson. Phillips also took first place in the 100 (13.12).

Alex Couch won the 1,600 (6:08.9) and teamed with Hannah Hofferberth, Ava Burson and Laura Wythe to win the 4x800 (12:35.22).

Also first for the Jackets were Navaeh Williams in the shot put (31-10), Makena Laslo in the pole vault (8-6), Melanie Boatright in the high jump (4-5) and Stella Bainbridge in the discus (105-2).

Matt Salvucci, Logan Taylor, Logan Eggert and Bryce Wiles each were part of two wins for the boys team.

Salvucci won the 1,600-meter (4:50.5) and — along with Eggert, Jordan Trebber and Jonathan Rutter — the 4x400 (3:43.96). Eggert also took the 800 (2:06.43).

Taylor had a pair of wins in the 300-meter hurdles (44.84) and the 4x200 (1:35.44) along with Wiles, Mitchell Taylor and Ethan Young. Wiles also won the 100 (11.07).

Other first-place finishers for Mount Vernon were Dylan Dowell in the 200 (23.15), Jack Craigo in the high jump (5-6), Logan Moore in the pole vault (11-6), Dominic Fuscaldo in the 100-meter hurdles (17.28) and the 4x800 team of Eric Marofsky, JoJo Ernst, Landon Rush and Rylan Baker (9:44.37).

 

BOYS TENNIS

Freshman Wade Brown’s dominating 6-0, 6-0 win over Anthony Pannell highlighted Mount Vernon’s first victory of the season.

The host Yellow Jackets posted a 5-0 win over Mansfield Madison in Ohio Cardinal Conference play on Tuesday, April 13, in Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon made it two wins in three matches with a 4-1 victory over visiting Mansfield Senior on Thursday, April 15.

But Watkins Memorial proved to be tough on Wednesday, April 14, handing the host Jackets a 5-0 loss.

Mount Vernon’s Jack Staats defeated CJ Steffey 6-0, 6-4; and Quinn Hoffman beat Will Laskey 6-2, 6-3 in singles action against Madison. In doubles play, the Jackets’ (1-4, 1-1) Alex Buehrer and Brian Sabula defeated Chase O’Connell and Nate Phillips 6-3, 6-3; and Ethan Jarosz and Toby Boggs beat John Keogh and Xavier Ethel 6-0, 6-3.

Against the Tygers, Hoffman knocked off Hyzan Toddie 6-0, 6-2; and the doubles team of Buehrer and Sabula beat Marquis Troche and Jayden Rueckert 6-0, 6-1. Mount Vernon got the other two victories by forfeit.

Watkins’ Andrew Hare defeated Staats 6-4, 6-1; Liam Grennan beat Hoffman 6-2, 6-0; and Josh Hare took Becket Elkins 6-0, 6-0 in singles play. In doubles action, Kevin Walter and Zach Clouse defeated Buehrer and Sabula 6-1, 6-0; and Zach Martin and Elijah Hargrow beat Jarorsz and Boggs 6-1, 6-2.

 

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Parker Gantt led Mount Vernon with 10 kills and a pair of blocks, but the Yellow Jackets fell short against Olentangy Liberty 25-12, 23-25, 25-20, 25-13 on Wednesday, April 14, in Powell.

Alex Reddy had 23 assists, Isaiah Jones had 15 digs, and Cooper Carpenter and Weston Porter had two aces apiece for the Jackets (0-11).
