MOUNT VERNON – Each year, the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) holds an American History Essay Contest on a selected topic for students in grades five through eight.
"Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to the topic, organization of materials, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness," the contest rules, posted on DAR.org, said.
The Lucy Knox Chapter of the DAR has announced the local winners of the essay contest.
First-place winners: from East Elementary School, Zachary Busenburg, fifth grade; and from St. Vincent de Paul School, Xavier Marhefka, sixth grade; Ellen Salvucci, seventh grade; and Lillian Percy, eighth grade.
Second-place winners: from St. Vincent de Paul School, Jace Daubenmire (sixth grade); Allison Tharp, seventh grade; and Andrea Holland, eighth grade.
The Good Citizen Award
The DAR also bestows an award for good citizenship, open only to high school seniors.
"This award recognizes and rewards individuals who possess the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in their homes, schools and communities," the website said. "These students are selected by their teachers and peers because they demonstrate these qualities to an outstanding degree."
The local winners are Peyton Carpenter, Highland High School; Chloe Ketron, East Knox High School; Rachel Wilson, Danville High School; Natalie Baker, Fredericktown High School; and Madeline Henrickson, Mount Vernon High School.
