One day was just not enough. Mount Vernon and Ashland played to a scoreless tie through 9 1/2 innings on Tuesday, March 30, only to have to finish it the following day.
Emma Jones spread around six hits and struck out 19 batters over 10 innings on the first day.
As it turned out, she didn’t have to throw another pitch in the game. When play resumed at Ashland on Wednesday, March 31, Rae Straight singled, Alanta Spurgeon reached on an error and Lilly Erb worked a walk to load the bases with one out. That set up Carlena Fiorilli’s RBI base hit to give the Jackets (3-1, 2-0) a 1-0 walk-off victory.
Brandilyn Raymer was nearly as effective for Ashland (1-3, 0-2). She allowed seven hits and five walks with 17 strikeouts over 9 1/3 innings but took the loss.
Wednesday’s regularly scheduled game was not nearly as tight. Makaylia Schlosser crushed three home runs including a grand slam, drove in 11 runs and scored five times to lead Mount Vernon to a 20-3 victory in five innings.
Brooke Radermacher also homered, one of her three hits for the game. She drove in five runs and scored once for the Jackets.
Jones started but only went two innings. She allowed two hits and struck out three to get the win.
Heath 9, Centerburg 2
Katlyn Jardine hit a two-run homer to help host Heath jump out to a four-run lead in the first inning over Centerburg. The Trojans couldn’t recover, falling 9-2 in non-league play on Tuesday, March 30.
Jardine finished with four hits including a double, three RBIs and a pair of runs to lead the Bulldogs (3-0).
Kaitlyn Tenzos paced the Trojans (0-1) with a couple of hits, a run and an RBI.
Highland 7, Olentangy Orange 6
Savannah Fitzpatrick came through with an RBI triple in the sixth inning to give Highland the lead, and the Fighting Scots held off a late rally by host Olentangy Orange to pick up a 7-6 victory in non-league play on Wednesday, March 31, in Lewis Center.
Fitzpatrick had two hits, scored three runs and drove in a run to lead the Scots (2-0).
Stevie Asher got the win for Highland, allowing six runs (four earned) on nine hits and four walks with nine strikeouts over a complete seven innings of work.
