Baseball roundup: Kane-Sapp, Burgess lead Jackets to pair of wins

Trenton Kane-Sapp and Dayne Burgess kept the opposing batters off balance as the Mount Vernon baseball team won a pair of Ohio Cardinal Conference games against Ashland on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 30 and 31.

Kane-Sapp had a no-hitter working through four innings and ended up getting the victory for the host Jackets (2-0, 2-0), who beat Ashland 10-2 to open the season on Tuesday.

Burgess came back on Wednesday and held host Ashland (0-3, 0-2) to just two hits in a 13-0 five-inning shutout.

On Tuesday, Burgess executed a squeeze bunt in the fourth inning that turned out to be the game-winning hit. He later clubbed a two-run double to finish with three RBIs for the game.

In the first game, Blake Meyer was a perfect 3-for-3 with a walk and drove in two runs on a single in the fourth inning, and Kaden Daughriety had three hits and scored twice.

Meyer was also perfect at the plate on Wednesday, going 2-for-2 with a run scored.

But it was Daughriety and Burgess who provided the offensive firepower in the second game. Daughriety had three hits, scored two times and drove in a run; and Burgess had three hits, three RBIs and scored twice for the Jackets, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and cruised from there.

Trojans take two of three in Myrtle Beach

Isaiah Reynolds had two doubles, two runs and two RBIs to help Centerburg bounce back from a loss earlier in the day by outslugging Toledo Christian 13-10 in non-league play on Thursday, April 1, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

The Trojans (3-1) built an 11-1 lead through 3 1/2 innings, only to hold off the Eagles in the late innings.

Dalton Hall, Brock Hurtt and Trey Kendrick also had two hits apiece for Centerburg. Hall had two runs and two RBIs, Hurtt scored once and drove in a run, and Kendrick scored two runs.

Malachi Beyer had two hits and drove in three runs, and Max Donawa had two hits and scored three runs to pace the Eagles.

The Trojans lost 10-0 in six innings to Myrtle Beach earlier Thursday. Hall, Dakota Baer and Hunter Parker accounted for Centerburg’s three hits.

Austin Gordon had two hits, drove in four runs and went the complete six innings, allowing three hits and a walk with 10 strikeouts to lead the Seahawks in the win.

The Trojans opened up their spring trip with a 14-2 victory in five innings over Bloomdale Elmwood.

Joe Tepper had two hits, including a triple, and drove in five runs. He also pitched four innings to get the win for Centerburg.

Utica 12, Millersport 3

Josh Dillon’s keen eye keyed Utica’s first win of the season. The senior walked four times and scored four runs to lead host Utica to a 12-3 win over Millersport at American Legion Post 92 Field.

Utica (1-1) drew 11 walks in total and jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings and cruised from there.

Mason Grant worked 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on four hits and a walk with four strikeouts to notch the win.

Hunter Billman had two hits and scored three runs, and Tanner Parsons and Collin McCullough each drove in a pair of runs for Utica.

Tyler Hall and Trevor Treinish had two hits and an RBI apiece to lead the Lakers (1-1).

Highland 4, Clear Fork 3

Kadin Johnson’s walk-off single lifted Highland to a 4-3 victory in non-league play on Tuesday, March 30, in Sparta.

Johnson’s big hit came with two outs, scoring Zach Pinkerton, who reached base on a one-out double.

Rider Minnick led the Fighting Scots (2-0) with three hits and a run.

Luke Schlosser had two hits and drove in three runs for the Colts (0-3), including a game-tying RBI single in the top of the seventh.

Newark Catholic 10, East Knox 0 (5)

Eli Morris and Chance Brooks had back-to-back two-run doubles to stake Newark Catholic to 4-0 lead after one inning. Host East Knox couldn’t recover, falling 10-0 in five innings in non-league play on Wednesday, March 31, in Howard.

Brooks led the Green Wave (2-1) with three hits and four RBIs, and Braden Brown (three innings) and Sam Muetzel (two innings) combined for a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.

Bryar Householder took the loss for the Bulldogs (0-3).

Olentangy Liberty Silver 15, Fredericktown 0 (5)

Fredericktown ran into a buzzsaw and fell to host Olentangy Liberty 15-0 in five innings in non-league play on Wednesday, March 30, in Powell.

Nathan Leininger (3 1/3 innings) and Connor Bourn (1 2/3) combined for the three-hit shutout; and Brock Amelung had two hits, four RBIs and a run scored to pace the Patriots (2-0).

Ty Hatfield, Lincoln Cunningham and Evan Rine accounted for the three hits; and Kaid Carpenter took the loss for the Freddies (2-1).
