Resurfacing of State Route 3 north of the Mount Vernon Public Square will begin in mid-April by the contractor, Shelly and Sands of Zanesville.
The Oak Street and Southern Catherine Street reconstruction project will begin during the first full week of May, Mayor Matt Starr said. Dirt Dawg Excavation will complete the project.
A contract for $365,779 was awarded to Tucson Inc. of New Philadelphia for the Kokosing River Restoration phases 1 and 2 at West Lake in Ariel-Foundation Park and at North Street, Starr said. The project is funded by the city and grants from the EPA and the Muskingum Watershed District.
Phase 3 of the project began at Phillips Drive by Environmental Remediation Contractor of Groveport.
Get Healthy Knox
Mount Vernon joined with the villages of Danville and Centerburg for the Creating Healthy Communities: Get Healthy Knox initiative. An online survey (https://bit.ly/3l4fdiw) will determine how popular bicycling and walking are for residents of Mount Vernon and the villages.
This initiative comes as Mount Vernon adopts its Complete Streets legislation.
“That is basically an encouragement to communities, to developers, to investors, that we want to make sure that we can maintain our connectivity with foot traffic and bicyclists,” Starr said.
Tami Ruhl, program coordinator at the Knox County Health Department, leads the initiative.
Utilities
Crews patched a six-inch water line break two weekends ago at the Mount Vernon Developmental Center. Starr said that was important because it supplied the center’s fire suppression system. A four-inch line break on East Sugar Street was the subject of a boil advisory on March 15 and 16.
“The advisory is just to let people know we’re testing it,” he said. A boil order means technicians have detected problems.
Streets and Parks
Workers installed a windscreen at the Memorial Park tennis courts to help reduce wind and sun on the courts.
Street sweeping continues this week, necessary because the city had to mix gravel with salt.
“We’ve got to clean that up and check it like it’s hazardous waste and take it to the landfill,” Starr said.
Public Buildings, Lands
LED lighting upgrades were completed at the Station Break Senior Center building and in City Hall’s basement. The first and second floors will be completed this week, with the income tax and water office building concluding the LED upgrades.
Outdoor circuits will be installed on the section of North Main Street adjacent to City Hall to enable people to spread out more during festivals and celebrations.
