MOUNT VERNON – Virginia R. Leonard, 95, of Mount Vernon, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 11, 2021, at Ashley Manor in Ashley, Ohio. She was born on Feb. 12, 1925, in Johnstown, the daughter of Robert and Alice (Egan) Stark.
Virginia graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 1943, where she had been elected as Homecoming- and Forum Queen. She started working for Shelmar during World War II; and shortly after John C. Leonard returned home from the war, they were married on June 14, 1947. Virginia spent the next several years raising her family, until 1963 when she went to work for Knox County. She worked in the Treasurer’s Office, the Auditor’s Office and retired from the Clerk of Courts Office in 1985.
Virginia was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Fraternal Order of the Elks and a 50-year member of Pleasant Grange. She was an avid golfer, and at age 79 she had a hole-in-one at Tomahawk Golf Course. Virginia loved to travel with friends and family, seeing much of the United States and Europe. She loved her family and she always looked forward to family gatherings. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and friend who will be sadly missed by so many.
She is survived by her sons, W. Douglas (Julie) Leonard and Mark P. (Pamela) Leonard, both of Mount Vernon; two grandchildren, Nathan Leonard of Tucson, Arizona, and Jared (Meghan) Leonard of Hillsboro, North Carolina; two great-grandchildren, Keaton and Reese Leonard; niece and nephews, Linda Lambert of Beverly Hills, Michigan, Ron Leonard of Corvallis, Oregon, and Stuart Leonard of Seattle; and good friend, Teri Blanchard, whom she thought of as a daughter.
Besides her parents, Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Leonard (1995); a sister, Maxine Van De Velde; and a niece, Dianne Parker.
The family will observe a private graveside service in Mound View Cemetery. The Rev. Ross Slaughter will be officiating.
